O
Research Assistant Professor / Scientific Manager (Chemical Biology)
  • Oregon Health & Science University
  • Portland, OR FULL_TIME
  • Department Overview

The Scientific Manager of the Center for Experimental Therapeutics (CET) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), with Dr. Malhotra, supports a team of researchers in the CET within the KCI/OHSU. The research goals of the group are to validate genetic drivers of leukemogenesis and identify effective drugs that could be used clinically to treat patients. Requirements for the job include a high level of expertise and knowledge regarding oncology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, hematology/oncology, large functional genomic data sets, methodologies/protocol used to generate and analyze functional genomic data sets, understanding of clinical trial regulatory requirements necessary for translation of research findings into the clinic, CLIA/CAP requirements, manuscript and grant writing, extensive managerial experience and a complete understanding of organizational processes required to execute and effectively develop/oversee large scale projects.

Every Knight Cancer Institute OHSU employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:

    • We act BOLDLY—Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
    • We SUPPORT each other—Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
    • We work as a CONNECTED team — We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone

    Function/Duties of Position

The current work in the CET focuses on cancer biology, chemical biology, pharmacology, toxicology and pre-clinical drug discovery/development (high throughput screening (HTS), organic/medicinal chemistry, refining functional assays), for expanded clinical use. Expertise in the cancer biology and pre-clinical drug development, as well as an in depth understanding of the regulatory processes surrounding the use of such a device, is of high value. It is of critical importance to the number of research projects as well as for correlate research studies performed in lab. This position will be responsible for directing a pre-clinical research team that develops and run the drug candidates, providing potentially lifesaving treatment options to patients with late stage cancers and generating primary patient derived data for research purposes. This position will also play a role in developing and executing sponsored research projects. This will include drafting SOW, providing laboratory oversight of active projects, delivering project updates, and providing guidance on future potential commercialization of research finding. Given the requirement for extensive laboratory experience, this individual will also be responsible for overseeing and providing scientific direction of key research personnel, graduate students and post-docs and their research projects. This position is also responsible for independently writing grants and providing grant support to all levels of researchers within the department and will also provide oversight and direction for manuscript writing and submission and creating statements of work for collaborative projects. This individual will also be required to create policies and communicate these to the CET laboratory. There will also be a requirement to teach and present research findings via scientific seminars at department- and institute-wide seminars, lab meetings, graduate course lectures, presentation to the public, and at national and international conferences.
