Asst. Professor - Chemistry teaches courses in the discipline area of chemistry. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Asst. Professor - Chemistry provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Asst. Professor - Chemistry typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and contributes to research In a specialized field. Chemistry Lab Coordinator and Departmental Assistant

  • Lab Coordinator (30 %):
    • Support the faculty with overall operation and upkeep of the six teaching labs and seven research labs.
    • Assist faculty with preparation of labs and lab experiments by gathering equipment, glassware, and chemical supplies and preparing chemical solutions needed for introductory labs and coordinate equipment and supply needs among the various Department members and courses.
    • Maintain general supplies and request repair/maintenance needed in the labs and/or for equipment.


    Department Manager (30%):
    • Maintain Department files such as budget records, student employment, class schedules and lab instruction manual each semester.
    • Manage work orders and maintain and complete order requests for chemicals, supplies, and equipment (including compressed gases).
    • Hire and supervise department student employees (see supervisory responsibilities below)

    Inventory Maintenance and Chemical Waste Management (20%):
    • Coordinate and maintain chemical inventory and waste management

    OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
    Safety (15%):
    • Coordinate with the Environmental Health and Safety Officer on current procedures and applicable protocols and maintain safety reference materials such as the College’s Chemical Hygiene Plan, the Spill Prevention and Control Plan, and applicable books.

    Training (5%):
    • In accordance with State and Federal regulations, attend training courses and annual refresher courses on the proper handling of chemicals and hazardous wastes. At a minimum, initial training includes:
      • First-Responder Awareness and Operation Levels (16 hours)
      • RCRA Hazardous Waste Training (12 hours)


    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Initiate and complete hiring paperwork for student employees (10-15 students).
    • Coordinate, train, and directly supervise 1-2 student employees.
    • Track student hours and the Department’s budget allocation.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Biology, and/or equivalent science.
    • Two to three years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience with basic laboratory skills, organizing supplies, and interpersonal interactions.
    • Ability to work with computers in order to maintain a stockroom inventory software system, and to navigate the College’s software for tracking budgets.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • General knowledge of Chemistry and familiarity with regulations and procedures on chemical waste disposal and safety issues in the lab.
    • Self-motivated and organized, good at time management and prioritizing multiple requests and responsibilities.
    • Good interpersonal skills to interact with faculty, staff, and students.
