  • Overview:
    We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Deputy Clerk. The Deputy Clerk will provide administrative support to the legal department and assist with various clerical duties. This is a full-time position with opportunities for growth and development.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: For purposes of 42 USC 12101:

    As a Deputy Clerk for the Lorain County Clerk of Courts, performs the following essential functions:

    1. Receives documents and forms to be filed with the Lorain County Clerk of Courts Office; reviews documents for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to court standards; files documents and forms in the appropriate case file or creates a new file if needed; assigns case numbers; maintains court journals.

    Skill in: (8) use of modern office equipment, (9) typing.

    Ability to: (10) interpret a variety of instructions in written or oral form, (11) read, copy, and record figures accurately, (12) maintain records according to established procedures, (13) complete routine forms, (14) prepare accurate documentation, (15) develop and maintain effective working relationships.

    2. Receives and responds to inquiries from the public and/or officials regarding court documents; retrieves documents from files as requested; researches case history and/or filings as needed; makes copies of public filings upon request.

    Skill in: (8) use of modern office equipment.

    Ability to: (10) interpret a variety of instructions in written or oral form, (12) maintain records according to established procedures, (13) complete routine forms, (15) develop and maintain effective working relationships, (16) communicate effectively, (17) respond to routine inquiries from the public and/or officials.

    3. Generates various legal documents issued by the Lorain County Clerk of Courts Office; prepares a variety of legal correspondence; issues subpoenas, warrants, indictments, commitments, etc.

    Skill in: (8) use of modern office equipment, (9) typing.

    Ability to: (10) interpret a variety of instructions in written or oral form, (11) read, copy, and record figures accurately, (13) complete routine forms, (14) prepare accurate documentation.

    4. Makes precise calculations of fees associated with filings, document retrieval, or other services provided by the Lorain County Clerk of Courts; collects fees and assessments; issues receipts; verifies monies received against records to ensure accuracy.

    Skill in: (8) use of modern office equipment

    Ability to: (10) interpret a variety of instructions in written or oral form, (11) read, copy, and record figures accurately, (12) maintain records according to established procedures, (15) develop and maintain effective working relationships, (16) communicate effectively, (17) respond to routine inquiries from the public and/or officials, (18) add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.

    5. Receives and responds to inquiries from the public and/or officials; provides a variety of information concerning court procedures and operations to the public; assists the public and/or officials in completing documentation or otherwise dealing with the Lorain County Clerk of Courts Office.

    Skill in: (8) use of modern office equipment.

    Ability to: (13) complete routine forms, (14) prepare accurate documentation, (15) develop and maintain effective working relationships, (16) communicate effectively, (17) respond to routine inquiries from the public and/or officials.

    6. Performs Legal Specialist 1 duties in other divisions of the Lorain County Clerk of Courts Office as directed (i.e., Civil, Criminal, Domestic, Records).

    Skill in: (8) use of modern office equipment, (9) typing.

    Ability to: (10) interpret a variety of instructions in written or oral form, (11) read, copy, and record figures accurately, (12) maintain records according to established procedures, (13) complete routine forms, (14) prepare accurate documentation, (15) develop and maintain effective working relationships, (17) respond to routine inquiries from the public and/or officials.

    7. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

    8. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Performs any and all other duties as assigned or directed in order to promote, further, or ensure the effective and efficient operation of the Lorain County Clerk of Courts Office.
