Biomedical Engineering Director directs and coordinates biomedical equipment service operations that provide lifecycle management of biomedical clinical and research equipment including safety testing, repair, maintenance, and user support. Establishes standards and procedures for equipment maintenance, testing, calibration, documentation, and inventory processes. Being a Biomedical Engineering Director provides technical leadership and develops applicable training and resources for medical staff to ensure correct and safe operations of all equipment and devices. Works with vendors to maintain up-to-date information about new products and equipment upgrades. Additionally, Biomedical Engineering Director supports the equipment needs of all specialty areas including Radiology, Clinical Pathology, Cardiology, Respiratory Therapy, and others. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director or head of a unit/department. The Biomedical Engineering Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Biomedical Engineering Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     Overview
    The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) at Northern Illinois University (NIU) anticipates hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering (BME) program with a research focus in Advanced Biomaterials starting August 2024.

    Established in 2019, the BME program offers BS degree to about 80 undergraduate students. The College of Engineering offers B.S. degrees in seven ABET and/or ATMAE accredited areas: Applied Manufacturing Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering. Graduate programs include five M.S. degree offerings in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Industrial Management and Technology, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as Ph.D. offerings in Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Strategically located in northern Illinois region 65 miles west of Chicago, the college is well established and enjoys a solid reputation for graduating students, research, and service to the community and profession. Of importance to the BME program, Chicago is home to established biotech and pharmaceutical companies like Abbott Laboratories, AbbVie, Baxter Healthcare, and Hospira as well as homegrown start-ups like Nanosphere and Ohmx.

    NIU is a public research university in DeKalb, IL, an affordable and growing community that is a commutable distance from Chicago and Rockford metropolitan areas.     This teaching and scholarly appointment will begin August 16, 2024. Based on the successful candidate's research interests, the successful candidate will have a tenure home in one of the college's four departments: Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

    Position Summary
    The Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering will have a strong capability of teaching all BME courses at the undergraduate level, with a research focus in Advanced Biomaterials. Candidates should show evidence or strong potential to become an effective educator in a diverse and inclusive environment and to be a productive researcher.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses as needed;
    • Provide academic advising and guidance to students enrolled in Biomedical Engineering;
    • Participate in student learning outcomes assessment, program assessment and accreditation;
    • Advocate for the Biomedical Engineering program, both internally and externally;
    • Foster relationships with industrial partners/prospective partners and initiatives and engage in grant and contract activities.

    Minimum Required Qualifications
    • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field, with related teaching interests and research experience in Biomaterials
