Biomedical Engineering Technician delivers biomedical equipment services that provide safety testing, repair, maintenance, and user support of biomedical clinical and research equipment. Assembles, installs, repairs, and maintains a variety of medical equipment. Being a Biomedical Engineering Technician tests the functionality of equipment and takes accuracy, sensitivity, and selectivity measurements to calibrate devices. Coordinates with medical staff and vendors to troubleshoot problems, resolve equipment malfunctions and enable new devices. Additionally, Biomedical Engineering Technician supports medical staff with equipment operations training. Typically requires an associate degree. VA unlike other healthcare systems integrates IT support with Biomedical Engineering. RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Lifecycle management of network equipment including but not limited to network switches, servers, routers and related infrastructure for any and all networked complex medical devices and systems such as imaging, life support, dialysis, and monitoring.
· Completes both routine and complex assignments involved identifying and troubleshooting issues related to VLAN configuration, IP addressing, sub-netting, HL7, DICOM, Access Control List (ACL) and network security across the medical device network.
· Utilizes advanced network test equipment and software including but not limited to tracers, wireless spectrum analyzers, network traffic monitors, command prompt, physical and virtual server software.
· Manages, troubleshoots and maintains complete systems of computerized networks, databases and servers including but not limited to biomedical information systems that store or facilitate patient information.
· Designs, implements and manages network incident response due to infection, loss of service or regional and local policy changes according to VA guidelines.
· Ensures proper security configuration for assigned devices and networks.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Associates of Science Degree, preferably in Information Technology, Biomedical Engineering or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
· Familiarity with electronic health record – preferably CERNER
DESIRED SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
· Minimum of 2 years’ experience in computer hardware and/or software installation in relation to medical devices and electronic health record
· Experience in medical equipment field service with proven knowledge and skill in supporting medical equipment
· Direct work experience with Windows Operating Systems, client and/or server
· Work experience with Linux or Windows operating system preferred
· Experience assessing vulnerability announcements and implementing patches and/or other compensating cybersecurity controls
· Proficient in the use of testing instruments, devices, simulators, and tools associated with servicing medical equipment
· Understanding of LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) operation and protocols
· Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment malfunctions
· Works with manufacturers to implement configurations, patches, and best practices surrounding each device.
· Investigates and resolves software issues on medical devices when appropriate.
· Performs periodic maintenance activities and hardware and/or software installs and upgrades.
· Reviews medical device configurations.
· Evaluation of hardware and software applications as it relates to medical devices.
