Job Overview
The Executive Director of Campus Recreation is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, coordination, and assessment of Georgetown University's campus recreation program, which includes recreation opportunities, fitness, and sports. The director serves as the campus and divisional expert on recreation, ensuring that student physical wellbeing needs are met. The director is responsible for supervision of direct reports; facilities and equipment management; safety, compliance, and risk management; developing policies and procedures; serving as liaison to campus partners and key stakeholders; budget management; marketing and communications; and assessment. The director must demonstrate an ability to engage in strategic thinking and serve as a campus leader; maintain a commitment to holistic student development; have strong interpersonal and communication skills; approach their work with an awareness of diversity and inclusion; and be able to foster strong relationships with campus partners.
The Executive Director of Campus Recreation has authority and responsibility for operation of campus recreation facilities including Yates Field House, a 142,000 square foot comprehensive recreation facility, including pool, fitness facilities, spin studio, multipurpose dance studio, racquetball, squash and indoor tennis facilities, weight training equipment, locker rooms with saunas, and general social and recreational space. The facility includes Kehoe Field, a rooftop recreational field including multi-purpose turf field space and a recreational running track.
Primary Areas of Responsibility
Departmental Leadership
Serve as an expert in the areas of recreation, intramurals, sport and fitness, with attention to the role that recreational pursuits play in the greater context of health and wellness for young adults
Oversee a staff of 13 full time professionals and more than 200 student and non-student part-time employees
Recruit, hire, train and manage direct reports; and establish elevating performance goals for all team members that align to overall department goals - Senior Associate Director, Associate Director for Fitness, Associate Director for Aquatics, and Facilities Coordinator
Foster teamwork and collaboration within Department, Division, and college-wide community
Support Division of Student Affairs efforts and priorities
Assume responsibility for department risk management and policy/procedure development; and with team members, ensure compliance with campus risk and safety policies and protocols among all patrons and programs
Provide strategic oversight of Learning, Recreation, and Educational Development (LRED) non-credit course offerings
Oversee and monitor budget status and ensure business processes are established, followed, and maintained
Review and approve financial and business processes and requests
Facility Management
Manage the operations of Yates Field House and Kehoe Field - establish and maintain strong communication channels with Planning and Facility Management project managers, supervisors and support staff to ensure regular, on-going, direct communication about building needs
Develop and execute long-range planning for facility enhancements and maintenance through the repair and replacement plans for equipment
Establish and direct Campus Recreation's overall marketing plan, to ensure campus and patron awareness, with attention to accuracy and engagement
Coordinate overall risk management activities and prevention for Campus Recreation, including identifying and liaising with individuals designated as campus subject matter experts in specific areas of risk, such as equipment maintenance protocols, protection of minors, Title IX compliance, fire safety, emergency response, and other areas of safety and compliance.
Strategic Planning and Assessment
Utilize data and feedback to drive change and sustain standard practices while evolving the culture, policy and procedures to meet evolving recreation and wellness needs
Develop and execute department strategic plan and annual assessment plans
Set annual goals and submit annual report
Recommend and implement changes based on best practices and benchmarking
Manage the overall effectiveness of Campus Recreation operations with responsibility for open recreation, facility and equipment maintenance, and fitness programming; and intramural sports, project and program management, budget management, staff development, certification and training, and recreation-related wellness program review and development
Collaboration, Communication, and Engagement
Collaborate with departments that represent significant partners to campus recreation, including the Department of Athletics, Center for Student Engagement (Club Sports and Outdoor Education), Health Education Services, School of Medicine, Scott K. Ginsburg Fitness Center at Georgetown University Law Center, and others: Identify opportunities for partnership, shared resources, and effective collaboration; Seek and provide feedback on operational, programmatic and strategic priorities; and Create structures for regular consultation and engagement
Engage students in meaningful ways to promote increased recreational wellness and affinity for Campus Recreation programs and services Establish and support Campus Recreation Advisory Council or other structure for input and involvement; and Identify student constituent groups including: general users; student staff; varsity, club and intramural athletes; group fitness participants; student EMTs; and student government leaders who act as stakeholders for campus recreation priorities
Ensure alignment with national trends and best practices as identified through National Intramural Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA), American Council on Exercise, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and other professional organizations
Ensure focus on supporting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging objectives in all aspects of Campus Recreation operation and programming: Ensure physical accessibility of facilities and uphold ADA compliance; and Identify opportunities to engage underrepresented groups in fitness, physical activity, and wellness initiatives
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Student Affairs, the Executive Director of Campus Recreation directly supervises 13 professional staff and indirectly supervises approximately 300 student employees. They act as a liaison with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including Department of Athletics, departments within the Division of Student Affairs, staff and faculty governance bodies, Human Resources, Neighborhood Life, Georgetown University Law Center, Planning and Facilities Management, Campus Ministry and others.
Qualifications
Master's degree in Student Personnel Administration, Recreation/Health/PE Administration, Sport Management, Higher Education, or a related field or a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with twelve years of relevant work experience - preference for Doctorate
At least 10 years of experience in collegiate/municipal recreation with demonstrated increasing responsibility in personnel, program, facility, and fiscal management
Demonstrated knowledge of collegiate recreational sports
Ability to plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of a diverse staff
Budget development and maintenance skills
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
Fundamental knowledge of facility construction/maintenance
Knowledge of Risk Management protocols and applications
Ability to function within limits of, and adhere to institutional, divisional and departmental policies and procedures
Fundamental knowledge of recreation related equipment
Basic computer skills
Preferred Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
Accredited National Fitness Certifications such as NSCA, ACE or AFAA certifications in Group Fitness, and ACSM, NASM, or ACE certifications in Personal Training and/or Health Coaching. CPR/AED certification
Certified Pool Operator License and other relevant licensure related to the field
