    The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multi-disabled and their families.     The Campus Safety and Security Director will make effective leadership decisions and solve problems using sound judgment in crisis situations. This role requires individual initiative and teamwork, requires excellent listening skills, and also requires physical ability and stamina, such as frequent standing, walking, lifting, and/or carrying materials. The Campus Safety and Security Director will be also be required to attend extracurricular activities and travel between campuses; work in all weather conditions; work effectively and communicate with groups and individuals of all ages in a blind, deaf, and multi-disabled community of individuals.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

    • Must possess a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field
    • Minimum three (3) years of experience in an administrative position in law enforcement
    • Must have leadership and management experience relating to safety and security in complex organizations or in a residential and/or academic setting.
    • Leadership and knowledge of organizational policies, procedures, to include technology.
    • Administrative and leadership skills as it relates to campus security, safety training and emergency management
    • Must have demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a working relationship with emergency services
    • Must have in-depth knowledge of applicable state, federal and local laws relating to safety and security
    • Must be able to read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations and affidavits. Must be able to demonstrate skills in court and other formal settings.
    • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively through interpersonal, verbal and written communication.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with students and staff by giving information and directions, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes.
    • Must possess demonstrated integrity
    • Must possess a valid driver license and be insurable on AIDB vehicle insurance.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    • Responsible for a 24-hour campus safety and security program in accordance with Institute priorities and strategic planning.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all local law enforcement and emergency personnel.
    • Provide training when needed to ensure that emergency personnel are adequately informed and prepared to meet the unique needs of students and staff in a crisis situation.
    • Work with unit administrators and directors as needed to manage acts of aggression or behavior that place students or staff at risk.
    • Ensure that guidelines for reporting incidents of violence or aggression are completed according to Institute policy and Alabama law.
    • Maintain AIDB Emergency Manual to ensure that it remains current and adequately meets all federal, state, and local standards.
    • Maintain programs for fire prevention and fire prevention equipment.

    • Conduct routine fire, tornado, severe weather, evacuation, and lockdown drills; evaluate results and implement corrective action as necessary.
    • Provide education and training programs related to safety and security to each campus and AIDB unit.
    • Implement a training program and supervise all security personnel.
    • Prepare employee performance appraisals and evaluate performances
    • When appropriate and directed, serve as primary investigator of on-campus incidents reported by security personnel. Must be capable of gathering information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and maintaining confidential information.
    • Work in conjunction with all campus administrators and directors to coordinate safety and security issues
    • Coordinate security efforts to manage inappropriate or illegal use of electronic media and devices by students and staff
    • Monitor inclement weather conditions and provide advanced warnings and recommendations for schedule, transportation or program changes
    • Coordinate procedure implementation and/or evacuations when necessary
    • Coordinate emergency communication efforts
    • Coordinate security efforts for all AIDB events including but not limited to athletic, public, alumni, special or other school activities
    • Serve on Institute committees as needed
    • Make recommendations for emergency preparations
    • Meet with student groups and organizations as necessary. Conduct educational training sessions for students and staff related to safety and security issues
    • Attend civic and government meetings when applicable
    • Maintain annual department budget
    • Must have access to reliable transportation
    • Must possess a valid driver's license and be eligible to be insured by AIDB insurance carriers
    • Must be willing and able to a work flexible schedule to include holidays, nights and weekends.
    • Must possess or obtain certification in CPR/ First Aide Certification within the first twelve (12) months of employment and maintain certification

    • Must be willing and have the ability to work with staff who are sensory impaired or multi-disabled
    • A sign language proficiency of SURVIAL according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained with the first twelve (12) months of employment.
