    The Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) Cancer Control (CC) Program seeks a full-time liaison with community outreach and engagement experience. The Community Liaison for Cancer Control will report to the Program Leaders for Cancer Control: Drs. Matthew Carpenter and Ashish Deshmukh, but will also work closely with the HCC Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, led by Dr. Marvella Ford. The Community Liaison will help facilitate bi-directional community input for ongoing and emergent CC research, coordinate community health education and outreach efforts, serve as a link between medically underserved communities and programs across South Carolina (the HCC catchment area), evaluate collaborations, including identifying new potential relationships, and assess how to improve communication.

    The Cancer Control Program consists of 40 full members and many affiliate members, across a wide range of disciplines, expertise, and administrative departments across the Medical University of South Carolina. Program themes include a strong focus on 1) tobacco use and cessation, 2) cancer health disparities, 3) screening and early detection, and 4) cancer survivorship. This Community Liaison for Cancer Control with work with a wide range of CC investigators, across all themes, to meet Program goals: to conduct relevant, community-responsive, accessible, and inclusive research of individuals throughout the entire catchment area.

    This Community Liaison is not to directly recruit participants for CC research studies, whether clinical trials or other. The Liaison will act as an ambassador for CC research, providing bi-directional engagement on research studies and offering referral information as requested. There is an expectation that the Community Liaison maintains current knowledge of existing CC research studies, which may involve individual discussions with separate CC investigators to identify their unique challenges and opportunities for improved community involvement.

    Job Description

    With a focus on empowering the community to develop and sustain lifestyle habits to prevent illness, manage chronic diseases, and promote health and well-being, responsibilities include:

    (Essential: 30%) Consult regularly with CC and COE faculty and staff to provide updates and develop strategies for optimizing community outreach and engagement within and among underserved communities throughout the catchment area (South Carolina). This Community Liaison is not intended to directly recruit participants for CC research studies, whether clinical trials or other, but will rather act as an ambassador for CC research, providing information on ongoing studies and offering referral information as requested. There is an expectation that the Community Liaison maintains current knowledge of existing CC research studies, which may involve individual discussions with separate CC investigators to identify their unique challenges and opportunities for improved community involvement.

    (Essential: 30%) Establish relationships with counterparts within community (non-profits, patient/survivor advocacy), religious organizations and other healthcare organizations (including FQHCs and free clinics) to help expand outreach efforts. Collaborate with community leaders to communicate catchment area needs and advocate for resources to policymakers.

    (Essential: 10%) Independently manage the scheduling of one-on-one and group-based health and wellness coaching sessions within clinical practice and research studies.

    (Essential: 10%) Evaluate study materials used to support education and training programs.

    (Essential: 10%) Create guidelines for collaborative efforts and function as a representative for stakeholders (i.e., community and CC) to address their questions and concerns

    (Essential: 5%) Maintain appropriate and timely documentation

    (Essential: 5%) Participate in regular team meetings and peer activities.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in a related field
    • Two (2) or more years of relevant experience 
    • Experience working with underserved communities
    • The ability to work in a thorough but efficient manner
    • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently. 
    • Demonstrates ability to collaborate with health care, research, and community leaders in a positive and professional manner
