    Supervisor: President
    Job Dates: Starting Immediately

    AMC seeks an entrepreneurial Chief Development Officer to bring his or her leadership skills, proven experience, and passion for the outdoors to a successful, strategic fundraising team.

    The Chief Development Officer reports to John D. Judge, President & CEO of AMC, and will collaborate with a highly experienced Leadership Team to advance all aspects of AMC’s operations and strategies as they relate to fundraising.  In addition to managing a team of 15 staff, the CDO will carry a portfolio of AMC’s key supporters, both significant philanthropists and some of AMC’s tireless volunteers.

    The ideal candidate will have experience managing and mentoring a staff that is both seasoned and evolving, building upon highly successful models with proven success and growth potential, while also piloting new opportunities to fully leverage the range of investors whose priorities mirror AMC’s future.  This is an exceptional opportunity for experienced fund development leaders with a sound understanding of how to run a complete fundraising effort in today’s market.  This search is being led by consultant Carolyn O’Brien.

    Review the complete position description at the “More Information” section of the AMC Full-Time Employment Homepage or contact Carolyn O’Brien at amcdev@carolynobrien.org.  Please read all instructions for applying.

    Summary:

    The successful candidate will embrace the opportunity to lead development at this vibrant, multi-disciplined, organization where societal change and fun in the outdoors combine every day.  AMC’s development operations span major gifts, an annual fund, planned giving, corporate and foundation support, and capital and endowment campaigns.  The CDO will oversee over $5.5 million in annual revenue from these programs as well as several million more in campaign revenue.

    Volunteers are critical partners in meeting fundraising goals, and candidates should have experience working with both grassroots supporters and boards of directors or trustees.  Serving as a consistent, energetic, and inspiring liaison to AMC’s Board of Directors and Board of Advisors is similarly a key component of this role.

    With its complex capital infrastructure and clear, long-term goals for increasing impact, both capital and endowment campaigns are important to AMC’s financial success.  The CDO will join an organization that has successfully raised tens of millions of dollars for one of New England’s most wide-ranging conservation programs, the Maine Woods Initiative.

    Historically, AMC’s most passionate and generous supporters have first engaged with the organization as members.  Today, the Membership Department generates more than $3 million annually in dues and gifts, and the CDO should be prepared to strategically advance the partnership between his or her department and Membership so that it remains both an important revenue stream and introduction to philanthropic support for AMC.

    Think Outside: AMC’s Leadership Giving Initiative represents philanthropic investment in AMC’s future.  With a 2018 total campaign goal of $24 million, the “LGI” is well underway and already providing long-term support for AMC’s goals to serve new audiences and regions as well as fund the programs that will engage the next generation of outdoor stewards.  The CDO will help bring the LGI to a successful close.

    Among the CDO’s primary responsibilities will be the following:

        Leading capital and endowment campaigns including identifying and securing major gifts of six figures or more while cultivating new donors to support AMC strategic initiatives;

        Partnering with the President and the Development team to grow AMC's regional philanthropic program, particularly AMC’s new initiatives in Greater New York;

        Identifying new opportunities in corporate giving and program sponsorships that leverage the outstanding AMC brand;

        Partnering with the President’s office to fully utilize the leadership and vision critical for successful donor visits, ensuring a dynamic and growing stewardship program;

        Developing a realistic yet ambitious department wide vision, annual plan, and budget that ensures the highest quality programs, alignment with AMC’s initiatives, and that both short and long-term revenue goals are met;

        Inspiring, developing, and fully leveraging the talents of each development team member as well as the critical volunteer support available through campaign leaders, solicitors, and the Board of Advisors;

        Serving as an active partner and organizational leader on both efforts involving Development directly and those that forward AMC’s mission and vision; and

        Representing personally and professionally the AMC’s historic and ongoing commitment to getting people active outdoors and in conservation stewardship.

    Qualifications and Qualities:

    While no candidate can equally meet every qualification and personal quality necessary for success, candidates should demonstrate an alignment with AMC’s mission and proven success both securing significant philanthropic investment and managing a top performing development team.  AMC’s work environment is collegial and high performing, but not formal.  An entrepreneurial self starter willing to roll up their sleeves to execute projects and programs will succeed. Important qualifications for the position include the following:

        At least ten years of fundraising leadership with responsibility for both team management and personal solicitation of six and seven figure gifts;

        Substantial understanding of the core elements of a multi-million dollar philanthropic initiative with expertise in one or more areas, preferably campaigns, major gifts, or complex annual funds;

        Demonstrated innovation with regard to new avenues for support; new approaches such as new technology, or new demographics from geographies to age cohorts or others;

        Ideally, candidates will demonstrate experience or deep understanding of philanthropic strategies that support investments in conservation, advocacy, environmental education, and/or recreation;

        Proven success leading and motivating dedicated professionals at all levels of experience that collaborate well and advance a culture of philanthropy throughout an organization;

        Outstanding communications skills, in writing, one-on-one meetings, and large presentations;

        Preferably experience in both the Boston and New York markets;

        Bachelor’s degree required; advanced professional development training, such as the CFRE preferred; advanced degree preferred;

        Genuine passion for AMC’s mission, evidenced professionally or personally.  Candidates should highlight their alignment with AMC’s mission in the required cover letter;

        A sense of humor and a recognition that donor cultivation within an organization dedicated to the outdoors will require time in the outdoors!

    Please note: Travel throughout the Northeast, evening and weekend work, and outdoor recreation will be required. Work is primarily performed in a standard office setting, operating standard office equipment. Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds from floor to waist high.  Ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions carrying up to 30 pounds of gear is preferred.
