Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages daily planning, operations, and staff of a medical library to meet the information needs of users. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Responds to more complex requests from faculty, medical staff, and students. Additionally, Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) possess broad and current knowledge of medical developments and scientific literature. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a director. The Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Minimum Education/Certifications
M.D. and Board Certification required
Advanced degree in Healthcare Management preferred (MBA/MHA/MMM etc.)
Demonstrated advanced course work in management preferred.
ACPE or American Board of Medical Management certification preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
At least 10 years of medical practice experience required. Previous experience as a CMO and/or Medical Director strongly preferred. Previous management experience at a senior level preferred. Experience and knowledge with clinical information systems preferred.
