Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages daily planning, operations, and staff of a medical library to meet the information needs of users. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Responds to more complex requests from faculty, medical staff, and students. Additionally, Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) possess broad and current knowledge of medical developments and scientific literature. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a director. The Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Job Description Summary:
    This position develops curricula and leads instruction for the School of Nursing. Through individual consultations, project leadership, and team-based instruction, this position fosters discovery, academic rigor and evidence-based practice. This position contributes to the University Medical Center's vision for discovery and research through expert literature searches, instruction, consultations and by participating in outreach engagement with faculty, staff and students, and with library and education professional organizations as appropriate.

    Job Responsibilities :
    Provides library liaison services for the School of Nursing academic programs as assigned.
    Conducts evidence-based research instruction and consultations for faculty, staff and students and for KU hospital nurse clinicians.
    Leads active learning classrooms and provides online and hybridized instruction.
    Provides health care research, citation management instruction, publication, and scholarly communication consultations with faculty, students, clinicians and researchers to facilitate research and academic success.
    Incorporates diversity, equity, and inclusion into research and educational practices.
    Identifies strategic opportunities for growth relating to best practice in health sciences instructions.
    Conducts and co-authors systematic reviews and other research that results in publication.
    Authors LibGuide content related to subject area expertise.
    Engages in scholarly research activities.
    Serves on university committees and working groups as appropriate.
    Provides educational sessions and consultations about copyright in educational settings and in scholarly publishing, including thesis/dissertations.
    Participates in professional organizations.
    Other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

    Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library/information science
    Aptitude for critical thinking
    Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships
    Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and instructional skills
    Commitment to working in a professional, collaborative team environment

    Preferred Qualifications

    Background in academic librarianship with a strong service orientation.
    Demonstrated innovation in teaching.
    Fluency using various research and educational technologies.
    Expertise in advanced health sciences research databases and research methods.
    Demonstrated experience in curriculum or course development, lesson planning, and educational assessment.
    Demonstrated experience in conducting and/or publishing complex research such as in-depth literature reviews, scholarly research, systematic reviews.
    Background in principles of scholarly communication and author's rights.
    Background in liaison librarianship for health sciences units.
    Demonstrated experience in working with key stakeholders in presenting proposals and collaborating on campus-wide initiatives.
    Evidence of project outcomes or scholarship relating to health sciences, adult, professional, or higher education.
    Dedication to quality user-centered services.
    Familiarity with fair use provisions in U.S. Copyright Law.

    Position Requirements

    Combination of in-library and remote work.
    Ability to lift one to twenty 20 pounds at a time.
    Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, use stepping stools when working in book/journal shelves or transporting office and library materials.
