Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages daily planning, operations, and staff of a medical library to meet the information needs of users. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Responds to more complex requests from faculty, medical staff, and students. Additionally, Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) possess broad and current knowledge of medical developments and scientific literature. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a director. The Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Responsibilities

    • Promote professionalism and interact with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
    • Display technical expertise necessary to ensure timely and accurate results of laboratory procedures.
    • Ensure specimens are obtained and processed in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
    • Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
    • Support organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
    • Attain required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
    • Exhibit problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and evaluate critical laboratory results.
    • Participate in the training/mentoring of new employees, students or interns including lectures and bench techniques.
    • Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
    • Demonstrate proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.  
    • Responsible for other duties as assigned.
    • Engage in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.         
    • Promote consensus building and applies techniques of conflict resolution and conduct improvement.  
    • Retain accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
    • Promote service excellence and growth of the laboratory.

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements

    • BS in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or a chemical, physical, or biological science degree
    • ASCP or equivalent certification. Certification must be maintained without lapse during employment

    Preferred Job Requirements

    • Previous clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist within a clinical laboratory
