Coding Compliance Specialist jobs in Aiken, SC

Coding Compliance Specialist researches and develops the pre-certification insurance policy standards and criteria used by case management and utilization reviewers that will ensure that requested medical services are appropriate and medically necessary. Collaborates with medical professionals to resolve questions about policy development and standards. Being a Coding Compliance Specialist assigns correct ICD, CPT, or other coding assignments for medical procedures that support policy standards in claims systems. Provides expertise and solutions to users regarding the appropriate coding for claims. Additionally, Coding Compliance Specialist has broad knowledge of medical coding systems. May require an associate degree in healthcare administration, a related field, or equivalent. Requires AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC). May alternatively require Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification. Typically reports to a manager. The Coding Compliance Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.   • JOB SUMMARY:

    The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist utilizes knowledge of insurance regulations, health insurance contracts, hospital medical coding, and bookkeeping to perform a variety of revenue cycle support activities. These include but are not limited to, medical coding, insurance verification, ensuring the accuracy of the information housed in the practice management system, preparing deposits, collecting, posting, and managing account payments, submitting accurate claims, and following up on accounts.


    III. QUALIFICATIONS


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of medical billing and collection practices.
    • Extracts relevant information from patient records and acts as liaison with providers and other parties to clarify information.
    • Assigns CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and DRG codes
    • Examines documents for missing information; corrects information as needed.
    • Performs patient chart audits and provides coding feedback and education to clinical team as needed.
    • Answers questions, advises, and trains providers and staff on medical coding.
    • Informs supervisor of issues with equipment and billing software and serves as point person for billing software issues and complications.
    • Ensures compliance with medical coding policies and guidelines; understands the application of each code set.
    • Maintains current knowledge regarding coding and diagnostic procedures.
    • Works towards compliance in all aspects of coding, participates in compliance activities as requested, and conducts/participates in provider coding reviews and education, as requested.
    • Demonstrable knowledge of computer programs relevant to position.
    • Knowledge of business office procedures.
    • Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices.
    • Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment.
    • Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system.
    • Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner.
    • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, fellow employees and the public.
    • Must be well organized and detail oriented.


    EDUCATION:

    Coding Certification from APPC or AHIMA. High school graduate or equivalent required, technical training preferred.


    REQUIREMENTS:

    • 3 years coding experience
    • Certified Coder (CPC, CCS-P)
    • Ability to meet defined performance and production goals
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent organizational skills


    Physical Abilities:

    Able to perform all duties with reasonable accommodation. Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Manual dexterity needed for using a calculator and computer keyboard.


    IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:


    The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist requires interaction with diverse groups, thus working conditions require significant tact and judgment daily. Nearly all work will be in the physician office environment.
