  • Provide services as a Communications Editor in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). To provide services and deliverables through performance of technical writing/editing support services.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Read, understand, distill, and parse technical and/or scientific content for optimal organization on the web, for public or internal sites/audiences. 1
    • Employ critical thinking to identify and create messaging that is clear. 2
    • Perform writing and editing of science or administrative materials for NIAID website and other vehicles, including social media, NIAID intranet, and NIAID newsletters. 3
    • Write with proficient skill, namely mastery of grammar, punctuation, and style. 4
    • Review and suggest social media messaging based on longer scientific, clinical, or administrative text. 5
    • Write for educated audiences of researchers and industry as well as the general public.
    • Ensure that content submitted for posting to the NIAID intranet adheres to approved grammar, usage, and style as found in the NIAID Editorial Standards Guide.
    • Advise on the writing of internal procedures that follow a logical sequence of steps.
    • Ensure that pages and documents on the NIAID intranet, including navigation, links, images, and text, are functioning properly and delivering an informative user experience.
    • Liaise and coordinate with staff from NIAID offices and divisions during the intranet content review process; including setting expectations, establishing deadlines, negotiating edits and other changes, and moving approved content along to the NIAID web team for posting.
    • Provide editorial support for internal NIAID newsletters, internal NIAID seminars, and Institute-wide announcements.
    • Assist team in editing documents for grammar, usage, and style as found in the NIAID Editorial Standards Guide.
    • Understand and be sensitive to NIAID, NIH, HHS, and federal requirements, needs, organization, and structure.
    • Demonstrate familiarity with HTML.
    • Assist in special writing assignments, such as newsletter articles, standard operating procedures, and others, as needed.
    • Make recommendations to project leads on editorial issues.
    • Research and write scientific and technical messages, talking points, frequently asked questions and presentations.
    • Review visitor feedback and queries submitted through social media and Internet sites and coordinate timely and accurate response.
    • Monitor complimentary, associated and relevant social media and Internet sites and accounts, linking to relevant content and preparing responses as necessary.
    • Work products and documents related to performing generation, posting, and distribution of content on the NIAID website, the NIAID intranet, NIAID social media platforms, or other communication vehicles. - Ad-Hoc
    • Computer-generated work including preparing a variety of office documents such as correspondence, documents, reports, memoranda; updating websites; tracking, recording, and directing web and intranet content to reviewers. - Ad-Hoc

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field.
    • Skilled in MS Office Suite.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Demonstrates strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
    • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
    • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
