  • Summary:
    The primary role of the Community Engagement Specialist is to facilitate Community Development projects from conception to completion.  This position is responsible for coordinating with directors, managers, and staff to manage special projects which may include business and community outreach, volunteer coordination, community events and educational programs.  The Community Engagement Specialist focuses on the realities of poverty at the local level and the need of those living in poverty.  Ultimately, bringing people together on behalf of and/or in response to individual/community needs by acting as a link between low-income families and the community.  Goals will be met by working with social services, local government, school districts, chamber of commerce, local nonprofit organizations, and community members to create positive change and improve quality of life for all members of the community. 
    This position promotes and provides opportunities to staff to embody the agency mission which is “To Engage Communities and Coordinate Resources to Improve the Lives of People Experiencing Poverty”.  Program operation is designed around the mission, vision, and values of the agency to meet both program and agency strategies and goals.

    Essential Functions:
    • Coordinate with local county staff in the planning, design, and implementation of local poverty education events.
    • Responsible for organizing and directing all project activities and maintaining effective working relationships with other agency programs to integrate and coordinate activities. 
      • Goals per fiscal year:
        • Implement one project/initiative (i.e. Cyber Seniors)
        • Provide at least 2 Poverty Education events.
        • Facilitate at least two Poverty and/or REALL Simulations.
    • Schedule presentations with community groups and organizations as determined necessary. 
    • Work closely with the Outreach Services Director and Outreach Services Manager in the development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the Community Service Block Grant
    • Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with community resources including human service agencies, organizations, individuals, and local public officials.
    • Responsible for mobilizing other potential resources to the advantage of low-income families.
    • Ensure that the community is aware of the realities of poverty and the purpose and goals of MVCAA through various means of communication.
    • Enhance or develop local advisory groups at the county level to address the needs and resources identified to address the causes and conditions of poverty.  Develop, guide, or facilitate advisory groups in developing local solutions and initiatives to address such causes and conditions.
    • Responsible for identifying, requesting and implementing financial resources for the support of community-based projects and initiatives.
    • Responsible for facilitating community dialog regarding poverty causes and conditions as well as community strengths and needs.  Advise management, staff groups and advisory groups on all county planning and policy matters.
    • Ensure that accurate project/initiative records are maintained monthly and that reports and paperwork are completed as required.  Responsible for accurate data entry in required systems, attendance records, timesheets, travel records, etc.

    Supervisory Responsibility:
    • N/A 

    Work Environment:
    • Assigned Family Resource Center with regular travel throughout entire agency service area.
    • Professional office environment
    • Requires the use of standard office equipment including computers, phones, photocopiers, fax machines, and laminating machines.

    Physical Demands:
    • Mainly a sedentary position
    • Ability to operate a computer and keyboard, printer/copier, and other office equipment.
    • Ability to do lifting and carrying of not more than 30 lbs. 

    Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
    • Non-Exempt, Full-time (40 hours a week, 5 days a week; Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm Friday 8:00 am to 12 pm)

    Travel:
    • Regular travel throughout entire agency service area
    • Occasional travel within Missouri and related Regional and National conferences, trainings, and other activities.

    Required Education and Experience:
    • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management/human services or related field.

    Preferred Education and Experience:
    • N/A

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
    • Negative results of initial and random drug testing
    • Family Care Safety Registry and fingerprint criminal background screening with acceptable results
    • Valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle

    Expectations:
    • Obtain Results Oriented Management and Accountability (ROMA) trainer certification within two years
    • Obtain certification to facilitate poverty/REALL simulations within one year.
    • Obtain Certified Community Action Professional certification within five years.
    • Perform duties with a focus on safety and wellness.
    • Adhere to agency policies and code of ethics.
