Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Performs microscopic screening of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Identifies all cases with abnormal findings for pathologist review, recording all findings in the EMR to produce accurate reports. Processes both gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Works with pathologists and other members of the healthcare and laboratory team to provide high quality laboratory results while upholding the Stormont Vail Tenets of compassion, patient safety and privacy, and improving the health of our community.
