Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Preferably a candidate major in genetics with cytogenetic work experience including both the wet lab preparation and chromosome analysis. Preferably ASCP in cytogenetics, BUT will take any ASCP with FISH experience. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
