    JOB DESCRIPTION:
    The Opportunity:
    This role is an exciting opportunity to serve on a diverse and dynamic team committed to the audacious task of transforming public education in Providence Public Schools. Working alongside a team of dedicated, equity-driven team of professionals, the goal is to deliver on societies’ most fundamental obligation: providing all children with access to a fair, equitable and rigorous education. The time for change is now and the district is in the process of a game-changing transformation led by a newly appointed State Turnaround Superintendent, in coordination with the Rhode Island Department of Education and with the support of the larger Providence community. The Director of Data and Strategy (hereinafter referred to as DDS) will play a key role in supporting the Director of Instructional Supports in managing and resolving high priority constituent issues and responding to the needs of parents, the community, and its schools.
     
    The Role:
    The DDS is responsible for providing network leadership with accurate and timely formative data needed to provide targeted supports to schools throughout the school year. As part of their duties, they will develop and execute the network strategy for school based leaders to work with student and operational data in order to drive action. The DDS is responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing data used in student, teacher and program evaluation for district and school initiatives both directly and through the supervision of the Network Data Strategist.
     
     The Candidate:
    Successful candidates must demonstrate a deep belief in the capacity of all students to achieve at high levels, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of leaders and stakeholders, and strong data analysis skills. 

    EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
    • 4-Year degree from an accredited institution
    • 2 years demonstrated experience working with a SQL database such as writing queries and functions as well as developing procedures and views
    • Experience with a scripting language such as Python or R preferred
    • Experience with a data visualization platform such as Tableau or PowerBI preferred

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:
    Specific Duties:
     
    Data Strategy:
    • Lead the overall Network strategy for the review and usage of data within schools
    • Oversees and maintains the data tracking system(s) used to monitor K-12 school academic performance across the network of schools to ensure appropriate progress monitoring of key performance indicators used to drive improvement efforts;
    • Develops new, innovative systems and structures for collecting, storing and visualizing data where needs dictate
    • Directs analysis of assessment data, including predictions of district accountability outcomes based on existing data;
    • Conducts item analysis inspections following formative assessments to identify gaps in instruction or question-type;
    • In collaboration with Division of Teaching and Learning, develops an assessment calendar for all schools to gauge learning in all core subjects at critical intervals throughout the year;
    • In collaboration with Division of Teaching and Learning coordinates and advises on the development of data dashboards and tools that school sites require to effectively inform their work
    • Identifies and reports gaps in data collection methodologies and works with the central office to implement process improvements to fill identified gaps. 
    • Supports network administrators in interpreting student performance by disaggregating and analyzing formative and summative assessment data and working with members of the school’s leadership team to determine appropriate next steps;
    • Prepares and/or directs the preparation of data reports for various audiences (e.g. community, school board, principals, district leaders);
     
    Coaching, Development and Evaluation:
    • Leads difficult conversations with executive leadership around their accountability metrics, their team and the use of data to drive results at the school level;
    • Provides direct coaching and support to other network leaders for interpreting and using data
    • Develop, track and monitor accountability measures for network team members and report regularly to executive leadership 
    • Evaluates the effectiveness of school or district programs/initiatives, using data;
    • Provides relevant and necessary professional development learning sessions to assist appropriate site-based personnel, district leadership and members of the school’s leadership team;
    • Supervising, coaching and supporting assigned personnel, including the Network Data Strategist.
     
    Staffing and School Resource Allocation:
    • Develop, maintain and execute a standardized system for the equitable staffing of schools for both classroom and non-classroom positions.
    • Analyze school unit assignments in comparison to master schedule assignments and course requests, including follow-up with sites to verify corrections
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    • Physical Demands: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. May be required to lift boxes and other materials up to 25 pounds.
    • Work Environment: The employee regularly works in an office or school environment; the noise level is quiet to moderate; 
    • Demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive information; in interpersonal problem-solving, decision-making and leadership skills; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to manage and work with a team to accomplish mission and goals. Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information. 

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS:
    • Must be able to work cooperatively and effectively with other school personnel, district staff, parents, and community members; demonstrate superior problem solving ability involving students, teachers, parents, administrators, and the public. 
    • Knowledge of or experience teaching or leading teachers using Common Core State Standards. 
    • Strong language, analytical, reasoning, and communication skills required. 
    • Experience working in public schools preferred.
