Avera seeks a dynamic and experienced executive to serve as its next Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to join the growing health system.

Avera, a large health system based in Sioux Falls, SD, employs 20,500 at 315 locations across the region. Facilities include 37 hospitals, 200 primary and specialty care clinics, and 40 senior living facilities in addition to home care and hospice, sports and wellness facilities, home medical equipment outlets and more. As a Catholic health care ministry, Avera carries on the legacy of the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, SD, and Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen, SD, delivering care in an environment guided by values of compassion, hospitality, and stewardship.

The CISO will report to the SVP, Chief Information Officer (CIO) and will lead information security for the system. As a key member of the CIO's leadership team, the CISO will build on the existing strong information security platform with a focus on strengthening the culture of security through robust communication, governance, collaboration, technology, and vendor partnerships. Information security is a priority and a key area of focus and investment for Avera. As such, the CISO will be highly visible to senior leaders up to and including the Board.

The CISO will provide the executive leadership and roadmap for information security in support of the health system and in alignment with the system and IT strategic plans. The CISO will fully evaluate the existing environment and identify additional opportunities to advance information security to meet the future needs of Avera. As a collaborative leader, the CISO will have the opportunity to make a significant impact by building upon the current program. This will include facilitating activities to further information security training and education on cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities, as well as maintaining and implementing new security tools to automate processes wherever possible.

The ideal candidate for the CISO position will be an experienced executive with a track record of success leading information security, preferably in a growing and complex organization. Prior experience in a complex healthcare system is a plus, but not a requirement. The CISO must be viewed as a trusted adviser who is a team player, collaborative, transparent and solutions driven. This executive will be able to build the business case and garner consensus with clinicians, staff and senior leadership. The position requires a strong leader who can communicate effectively and develop trusting relationships at all levels.

While it is strongly preferred the CISO relocate to Sioux Falls, SD, there is openness for the incumbent living within a reasonable distance with the understanding frequent travel to the headquarters and regional sites will be required.
