  • Currently recruiting an Diagnostic Imaging Technician - Mammography to provide care to active duty military members and their families at Joint Base Andrews, MD. The Diagnostic Imaging Technician - Mammography is a full-time position, 80 hours per two weeks, schedule can vary. Full benefits, including 17 days paid vacation/sick leave and 11 paid Federal holidays.




    DUTIES OF THE DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING TECHNICIAN - MAMMOGRAPHY:
    • Operates X-ray equipment to produce diagnostic images and assists radiologist or physician with special procedures. Prepares equipment and patients for screening, diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures. Performs technical and administrative mammography activities. Uses health protective measures such as universal precautions and radiation protection measures.
    • Performs administrative and front desk duties to include receiving patients and imaging requests, scheduling, and explaining methods of examination in person and over the telephone. Assesses patient clinical history to determine the most effective protocols. Consults with referring physicians and technicians as necessary to obtain information regarding patient s examination. Utilizes hospital information systems.
    • Receives patients, explain procedures, and provide appropriate care. Determines if any special patient preparation is required. Correctly position the patient for the examination and make adjustments necessary for the required examination.
    • Operates mammography units to include stereotactic, breast biopsy, and tomosynthesis units.
    • Determines proper instrument technical factors and control settings to ensure correct calculated exposure of targeted body parts. Performs screening and diagnostic mammograms to include spot compressions, magnification views, and any other views requested by the radiologist when necessary. Sets up room and trays using sterile/aseptic techniques, and assists radiologists with needle localization and stereotactic breast biopsy procedures. Performs all mammography examinations according to department protocols.
    • Identifies abnormalities and determine need for additional mammography views per department protocol (either before or after consulting with department radiologists). Notifies physician of significant exams requiring immediate attention.
    • Makes minor adjustments on equipment. Differentiates artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Program the examination equipment.
    • Utilizes the hospital information system and Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS) to acquire, transmit and store examinations
    • Images to be read remotely will be transmitted by the technologist, according to department policies, utilizing PACS.
    • Practices safety principles. Performs two patient identifier verification of patients. Assists with consent procedures prior to exams requiring written consent from patients. Safely oversees, and brings to practice, As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles for patients and staff. Performs equipment quality control checks. Monitors personnel to ensure protective procedures such as radiation safety, hazardous material communications, and Air Force Occupational Safety and Health programs are followed. Performs tests on radiation protection equipment. Assesses staff competence, and monitors appropriateness of care and completeness of examination requests.
    • Ensures a summary of the results of the mammographic examination are written in lay terms and is sent to patients within established guidelines.
    • Assists with the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) program. Conducts daily QC and periodic quality assurance tests of various equipment and reports and documents findings in accordance with local and AF policy, Food and Drug Administration and American College of Radiology guidelines. Performs daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual quality control inspections on all mammography units and processors. Perform daily warm ups of all mammography units. Maintains mammography files and retrieves and/or hangs films for comparison.
    • Helps maintain pathological results from biopsies through mammography tracking system to further assess mammographic quality for retrospective review 16 and analysis.
    • Helps maintain records documenting initial and continuing qualifications of all personnel who have performed or are performing the duties of interpreting physician, radiological technologist, or medical physicist, and all employees assigned to quality assurance tasks for the facility. Operates and helps maintain radiographic equipment, mammography exam tracking system, and CHCS database.
    • Maintains and cleans mammography units, processors, and cassettes on a regular basis in accordance with Radiology department, Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) standards. Stocks and maintains an adequate level of supplies required for mammography exams and procedures. Recommends necessary monthly repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded.
    • As needed, assists with student training activities IAW with regulation and course director plans;may instruct new personnel and other staff in the performance of Mammography and all other pertinent aspects in providing diagnostic quality care.
    • Attends and participates in all meetings, staff conferences, and other appropriate professional activities as required by the supervisor.
    • Recognizes the need for and institute necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest.
    • Provide clerical / administrative work that is required for general day-to-day function of the Mammography department.
    • Schedule diagnostic / screening examinations IAW department protocols and supervising radiologist directions.
    • Maintain mammography films IAW MQSA standards. Conduct annual film purge.

    QUALIFICATIONS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING TECHNICIAN - MAMMOGRAPHY:
    • Degree/Education: Graduation from a radiologic technologist training program accredited by the Joint Review committee on Education in Radiological Education (JCERT).
    • Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: IAW position description / qualifications as stated within Exhibit 5 of the basic contract
    • Experience: Must be knowledgeable in anatomy and physiology such as the location, appearance, and function of the various systems including breast issue, lymph nodes, etc., in order to interpret the examination request accurately, to understand the functioning and interrelationship of the various organs appearing on the film and the various stages of the examinations;for example, the more common abnormalities of veins and arteries, calcium deposits in the breasts, etc., in order to recognize the conditions, ensure that the radiographic studies properly illustrate the condition, and adjusts positioning technical factors or other variables to better illustrate them if necessary;medical terminology and ethics;legal aspects of medicine;healthcare accreditation standards including MQSA, ACR and FDA, Mammography Quality Assurance procedures;Mammography reporting procedures;radiation physics, radiobiology, and radiation protection;basic electronics theory;techniques of operating radiographic and specialized diagnostic imaging equipment;radiographic positioning;patient care and monitoring techniques;image recording media and processing techniques;quality control procedures;infection control;aseptic and sterile techniques;reactions to contrast media;BLS;methods of recording the image;and medical records administration.
    • Have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in mammography or required performance of 200 exams within the last two (2) years.
    • Board Certification: IAW position description / qualifications as stated within Exhibit 5 of the basic contract.
    • Licensure/Registration: Current registration as a Radiologic Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
    • US Citizenship required (for access to government computer systems).
    • BLS for Healthcare Providers
