Digital Collection Librarian maintains a library's digital collection of books, serials, documents, audiovisuals, or other materials, and assists groups and individuals in locating, obtaining and using materials. Trains others in the creation or preservation of digital resources and the use of the library's digital system(s). Being a Digital Collection Librarian is responsible for the library's open source projects and procures licenses for digital content. Interacts with IT staff in selecting/developing, implementing and maintaining the library's technical infrastructure. Additionally, Digital Collection Librarian requires a master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited school in a related field. Typically reports to a director. The Digital Collection Librarian manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Digital Collection Librarian typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     The City of Walla Walla offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, and dental health insurance. City
    paid $50,000 Life/Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance plus voluntary Life and Long-Term Disability. Washington
    State Public Employees Retirement Program (PERS) II/III. City match up to 3.5% of base salary for deferred compensation
    (457(b)). 3% bilingual Spanish premium. Generous vacation leave, sick leave, and ten (10) paid holidays plus 40 hours
    floating holidays annually.


    NATURE OF POSITION:
    Provides reference, readers’ advisory, and programming services for adults and teens; contributes to collection
    maintenance and development; participates in the daily operations of the library. Supervises library functions
    and activities including staff as assigned.

    REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Master's Degree in Library and Information Science and one year experience in a public library. Washington
    State Librarian Certificate.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Supervisory experience. Experience working with adults and/or teens. Bilingual in Spanish.

    General direction and oversight are provided by the Library Director.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Employees of the City of Walla Walla are expected to model and foster the City’s core values:

    2. Responsible for maintaining a safe environment in accordance with the Library Rules of Conduct.
    3. Develop, coordinate, and implement adult and teen programs and services.
    4. Promote events and services through flyers, websites, and social media.
    5. Collaborate with the Library Director to develop strategic plans and divisional goals.
    6. Identify and develop partnerships, grants, and other funding opportunities for advancement of the

    Library’s strategic plan.
    7. Provide outreach programming to teens and adults.
    8. Develop and maintain strong relationships with schools, organizations, businesses, and community

    stakeholders.
    9. Plan, organize, schedule, and direct work activities for projects in assigned areas of adult, teen, and

    reference services.
    10. Recruit, train, schedule, and monitor volunteers.
    11. Assist patrons in their use of the library; provide reference information, research assistance, and

    readers’ advisory; respond to patron questions and concerns.
    12. Remain current with community demographics and interests to inform collection development and

    programming.
    13. Evaluate and select materials for assigned collections. Maintain library collection by weeding and

    updating library records.
    14. Evaluate and recommend information technology for use by the public and staff through the use of

    short and long-term planning strategies. Remain current with library technologies and techniques.
    15. Use current standards to catalog library materials with knowledge of MARC records, the Dewey Decimal

    System, and Library of Congress subject headings.
    16. Monitor and maintain assigned budgets; prioritize and determine expenditures within established

    guidelines and procedures.
    17. Maintain records and prepare narrative and statistical reports.
    18. May supervise library functions and activities including Library Technicians and Shelvers, during

    evenings, weekends, and other times as assigned.
    19. May provide assistance and backup for the Young People’s and Public Services Librarians as needed.
    20. Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Thorough understanding of the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, and the philosophy
    of library service, public services, collection development, and materials classification.
    • Ability to interpret and comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations,
    including City policies and procedures.
    • Proficiency in technical processes related to the acquisition, cataloging, classification, and circulation of
    library materials.
    • Proficient in the use of reference and bibliographic tools and techniques.
    • Knowledge of MARC records, Dewey Decimal Classification system, and proper use of Library of
    Congress subject headings.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences; research methods and report
    writing techniques.

    TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
    Specialized software and internet-based programs, including automated library computer systems, bibliographic
    databases, downloadable book apps, and Microsoft Office 365; other technology and media equipment
    available to patrons and used in the library and media lab.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    Sitting and standing for extended periods of time; seeing, hearing, and speaking to exchange information;
    repetitive hand movements; intermittently walk, kneel, stoop, bend at the waist, and reach overhead, above the
    shoulders, and horizontally; lift up to 20 pounds.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Public library building: work processes and communication transactions performed with a variety of audiences
    for multiple purposes; exposure to constant interruptions. Minimal outside exposure to inclement weather
    conditions while retrieving materials from book drops. May be exposed to bodily odors from patrons. May
    encounter difficult situations and behaviors from patrons.
