Director of International Education leads and directs all aspects of the institution's international programs. Oversees programs, activities, faculty affairs, and academic support services. Being a Director of International Education develops and implements strategies to attract and retain students and faculty. Oversees the operations of the study abroad and foreign exchange programs, the international admissions process, and English language programs. Additionally, Director of International Education ensures that the curriculum remains current and is in compliance with accreditation standards. Monitors the documentation and visa application processes. Oversees the departmental budget and management of expenditures throughout the year. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Director of International Education typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Job Summary

    The Assistant Director will develop, implement, and coordinate programs, services and activities for International Education that educate and promote a campus-wide understanding of cultures around the world and international students' experiences.     Duties and Responsibilities


    Cultural Programming

    • Develop programs and events that highlight cultures around the world and support international students' experiences while engaging domestic students.
    • Develop educationally transformative programs to enhance inclusive campus climate.
    • Collaborate with other units and campus-community partners to develop programs that encompass various intersecting identities (e.g., nationality, immigration, faith, gender identity, ability status, multiracial).


    Public Engagement, Marketing, and Outreach

    • Develop public engagement programs with alumni and the local community.
    • Coordinate marketing and communications (e.g., electronic newsletter, website, social media, and campus resource fairs).
    • Coordinate training opportunities for campus partners and local community.


    Student Support

    • Assist in recruiting, teaching, training, and supervising student staff and volunteers.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Education


    Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in international education, higher education administration, Teaching English as a second language, college student personnel, counseling, or related field.


    Preferred:


    • Master's degree in international education, higher education administration, English as a second language, college student personnel, counseling, or related field.


    Experience


    Required:

    • A total of two (2) years in education, training and/or work experience with international education or international students' services.
    • Experience teaching or studying abroad; coordinating cultural, social, educational, and/or social justice programs; and/or in marketing and communications (e.g., electronic newsletters, websites, social media, resource fairs).


    Preferred:

    • Experience designing and implementing programs focusing on international students' experiences while engaging domestic students.
    • Professional experience advising and creating leadership development opportunities for students and/or student organizations.
    • Experience with public speaking and developing public engagement programs.
    • Experience recruiting, teaching, training, and supervising student intern staff and volunteers (undergraduate and/or graduate students).

    ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Cultural Programming


    • Develop and promote educationally transformative programs that result in cultural awareness to enhance the Illinois Experience of all students, and appreciation for international students and diversity in local and global contexts.
    • Develop programs and events that highlight cultures around the world.
    • Develop programs and events that support international students' experiences and engage domestic students.
    • Collaborate with other units and campus-community partners to develop programs that encompass various intersecting identities (e.g., nationality, immigration, faith, gender identity, ability status, multiracial).
    • Assist in obtaining funding support through co-sponsorships, grants, gifts, and through effective collaborations with SSIB leadership and the Student Affairs Advancement team.


    Public Engagement and Marketing

    • Develop public engagement programs with alumni and the local community.
    • Coordinate marketing and communications (e.g., electronic newsletter, website, social media, and campus resource fairs).
    • Coordinate training opportunities for campus partners and local community.


    Assessment and Evaluation


    • Maintain documentation on all events, including but not limited to: program sign-in sheets, assessments, photo albums, and video archives as part of IE's assessment and success initiatives.
    • Develop and maintain assessment and evaluation tools. Utilize emergent data to improve and expand IE services, educational opportunities, and to inform stakeholder's knowledge of IE's progress.
    • Oversee ongoing evaluation of programs and activities.


    Capacity-Building and Outreach

    • Collaborate with other units, academic departments, and student organizations on programming, advising, leadership and global perspectives development of all students.
    • Serve on campus-wide committees, task forces, and work groups on campus and in the broader Urbana-Champaign community to enhance the international students' experience on campus.


    Supervision

    • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student staff and volunteers.
    • Provide professional learning experiences that enable student employees to develop the personal and professional skills needed to thrive in a diverse society.
    • In the absence of the Director, the Associate Director may assume responsibility and provide management for IE operations.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Position Requirements and Qualifications (Associate Director):


    Education


    Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in international education, higher education administration, Teaching English as a second language, college student personnel, counseling, or related field.


    Preferred:

    • Master's degree, preferably in international education, higher education administration, TESOL, college student personnel, counseling, or related field.


    Experience


    Required:

    • A total of four (4) years in education, training and/or work experience in international education.
    • Demonstrated experience teaching or studying abroad and/or teaching/working with non-native speakers in the U.S; designing and implementing programs focusing on international students' experiences while engaging domestic students; and in marketing and communications (e.g., electronic newsletters, websites, social media, resource fairs).


    Preferred:

    • Two or more years of teaching experience abroad.
    • Professional experience advising and creating leadership development opportunities for students and/or student organizations.
    • Experience with public speaking and developing public engagement programs.
    • Experience coordinating cultural, social, educational, and/or social justice programs.
    • Experience with fund raising and grant writing.
    • Experience in providing intercultural training for staff.
    • Demonstrated success of collaboration with key partners.
    • Experience recruiting, teaching, training, and supervising student intern staff and volunteers (undergraduate and/or graduate students).
    • Ability to demonstrate empathy, problem solving, professional boundaries, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Experience in formative and summative evaluation.

    Environmental Demands (Assistant & Associate Director):


    • Office position that requires evening and weekend work hours, and some travel is occasionally required.

    Appointment Information

    These are both full-time, benefits-eligible, 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after June 26, 2023. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, starting at $52,000 for Assistant Director; $68,000 for Associate Director.
