Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Director of Counseling, Disability and Testing Services

  • The Director of the Counseling, Disability, & Testing Services is a full-time, 12-month, professional staff position. The primary work location will be at the Senatobia Campus. Standard work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some evening and weekend hours required. This position is an on-call position as needed for crisis situations after hours. This position will also require six (6) mandatory Saturdays for the administration of the National ACT.

    The Director of the Counseling, Disability, & Testing Services will work to ensure student success by continually collaborating with departments across the institution and guiding students as they transition to graduation. This position actively supports and engages in strategic commitments to instructional, institutional, personal, and community success while adhering to Northwest Mississippi Community College's mission, vision, and values.  

    The Director of the Counseling, Disability, & Testing Services reports to the District Dean of Student Services. 

     

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Counseling from an accredited College or University.
    • Experience as a licensed professional counselor.
    • Managerial or supervisory experience.
    • Experience in an educational environment, social service agency, or private business sector with specific experience in customer services, preferably student services.
    • Experience with providing short-term professional counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and group counseling.
    • Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Mississippi.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience administering the ACT and placement testing.
    • Experience with disability services.
    • Experience in a college counseling center.
    • Certification in Telehealth. 
    • Experience developing and facilitating workshops, training, and presentations on mental health-related topics to various audiences.
    • Experience counseling diverse populations, having familiarity with the ACT & or other placement testing, having experience with serving students with disabilities and have demonstrated experience in Counseling and Student Success initiatives.

    Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities 

    The Director coordinates and oversees all operations of the Student Counseling, Disability, and Testing Services: 

    1. Provides leadership and vision for the Department of Counseling, Disabilities, and Testing Services.
    2. Supervises and provide personal and mental health counseling. Serves as the Test Administrator of the National & Residual ACT and supervises and administers placement testing and other related testing efforts.
    3. Develops and maintains Counseling, Disabilities, and Testing Services policies, procedures, and protocols in compliance with state/federal requirements. Would also maintain and oversee the department budget, expenditures, and contracts and will supervise, manage, and evaluate staff and staff development.
    4. Assists professional counseling staff by providing professional, short-term counseling services (individual or group), including intake, treatment planning, case management, crisis intervention, assessment and consultation to enrolled students.
    5. Collects, assesses, and reports on Counseling Center utilization rates, effectiveness, and student learning outcomes. Also, creates programming and student initiatives for outreach of services to students and the college community.
    6. Works with Campus Police, Dean of Students Office, faculty, and staff to address and respond to students expressing harm to self or others. Also, assist the Dean of Students in providing an appropriate and coordinated response from the College to personal and campus emergencies involving students.
    7. Ensures compliance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and other federal/state requirements for counseling records by supervising the maintenance, security, and proper disclosure of such records.
    8. Maintains documentation of sessions and other services using an electronic medical records system in an accurate and timely manner.
    9. Provides consultation, training, workshops, presentations, and outreach programs to the campus community related to mental health issues and trends, psychological and behavioral management techniques, and department services.
    10. Assists in editing the Student Bulletin and conducts annual reviews for professional staff of supervisory areas.
    11. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional development courses, and attending training and courses required by the Dean of Students.
    12. Assists and supports programming for the department division of Student Services and Enrollment Management and participates in campus-wide committees as assigned.
    13. Performs other related duties as specified by the Dean of Students or Associate Vice President for Student Services and Enrollment Management.

     

    Knowledge/Skills Required for the Position

    • Knowledge of mental health conditions and ability to engage in emergency situations.
    • Meeting the needs of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic background of the student, community, and employee population. Also, to have an understanding of the unique challenges faced by low-income/first-generation college students.
    • Experience with marketing and strategic community outreach. Also, have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external constituents.
    • Comfortable presenting to groups, effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication and problem-solving skills Also, have strong time management and organizational skills.
    • Experience in providing effective student mental health services and the ability to engage with students in face-to-face and virtual environments.
    • Competency with personal computers, mobile devices, and standard office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and online meeting software. This would include helping maintain a database system for monitoring and tracking program participants.
    • An understanding of and commitment to the College's mission, vision, and values and to perform other duties as assigned by the District Dean of Student Services.
