    Position Summary:

    In this dual role, the Education and Community Engagement Coordinator will serve both the Community Engagement and Education teams. This position will assist in facilitating family museum programs and visits to the History Clubhouse children's exhibit. Also, this position will coordinate adult programming and events, some of which overlap with family programs, while liaising between the education and community engagement teams.

    This position is on-site and is a 40-hour work week including required Tuesday afternoons and Thursday evenings. This position also requires working at least two weekend days a month. The final schedule will be determined by supervisors.

    Essential Functions:

    Community Initiatives (50%)

    • Must have Thursday evening availability for Thursday Nights at the Museum events.
    • Work with the Community Engagement team to support the weekly Thursday Nights at the Museum series by coordinating the pre-program happy hours. Happy hour activities relate directly to the content of the main stage program and may include resource tables, games, pop-up style performances, hands-on crafts, an historian's corner, and other opportunities for engagement.
    • Work with the Community Engagement team to determine happy hour activities and coordinate all aspects of their execution, including scheduling, contracts, gathering supplies, creating signage, creating background music playlists, communicating with collaborative organizations, etc.
    • Be present during the happy hours to manage any music, make announcements over the sound system, and help transition people to the main stage program.
    • Ensure that all happy hour information is correct and up to date on the MHS website.
    • In coordination with the Marketing and Communications team, contribute to promotional efforts, especially through targeted emails and sharing promotional information with collaborative organizations.
    • Ensure that all happy hour activities stay within budget.
    • Participate in team, department, and division meetings and exhibit teams as assigned.
    • Assist with some additional large-scale events such as Twilight Thursdays (which replace Thursday Nights at the Museum for several weeks), the annual Día de los Muertos event, the MLK Community Celebration, exhibit opening and closing celebrations, and outreach events in the community, and other events, especially those that cross over with Early Childhood and Family Programs and K12 Programs..

    Early Childhood and Family Programs (50%)

    History Clubhouse:

    • Assist in welcoming guests and facilitating a fun and educational experience in the History Clubhouse at least two shifts a week.
    • Discuss historical content and facilitate play in the children's exhibit, History Clubhouse, with youth and adult guests
    • Sanitize and complete routine cleaning in the children's exhibit; work to ensure safety of visitors and protect History clubhouse gallery space for misuse
    • Work to ensure safety of visitors and protect Clubhouse gallery space from misuse.
    • Complete opening and closing procedures for History Clubhouse.
    • Work as a team and communicate effectively and strategically.
    • Verbally promote the History Clubhouse and Early Childhood and Family Programs among the local community and visitors

    Program Assistance:

    • Must have some evening and weekend availability including the required two weekend shifts per month to assist with youth-focused events or staffing the History Clubhouse children's exhibit.
    • Attend educational training; must have Tuesday afternoon availability for paid training and professional development.
    • Develop and prepare craft projects for upcoming programs, as assigned.
    • Assist with contacting and scheduling community collaborators for History Exploration Day
    • Participate in the coordination and delivery of programs including History Exploration Day, Winter Getaway, MLK Community Celebration, and so on.

    Qualifications:

    • 2 years or more of coursework in Education, Public History, Event Planning, History, Museum Education, Museum Studies, or related field is strongly preferred.
    • Please note: Candidates who have significant experience working with children and/or adults in an informal educational environment will be considered even without formal education.
    • Minimum 1 year of experience working with children ages 10 and under.
    • Minimum 2 years of experience working with cultural institutions, event planning, and/or community collaborators.
    • Minimum 6 months of customer service experience.

    Skills:

    • Familiarity with informal education preferred
    • Experience with event coordination and/or museum programming, preferred
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Comfortable working with diverse audiences that range widely in age, gender and ability and come from varied economic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.
    • Comfortable speaking publicly in large and small group settings.
    • An interest in and passion for history.
    • Ability to work independently and as a team.
    • Time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
    • A passion for supporting community building and an understanding of how history and museum programming can serve that goal.
    • Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours is required.
    • Multiple language skills are not a requirement, but bilingual or multilingual candidates may be given preference (if all other experience is strong).
