The Grants, Partnerships, Research & Demonstration (GPRD) department acts as a catalyst and enabler to SMUD's 2030 Zero Carbon Plan and long-term sustainability goals. Our research programs focus on three priority topic areas: Load Flexibility, Electrification, and Thermal Transition. We are posting this opening to support the R&D Load Flexibility Team with Senior Electrical Engineering expertise. The Load Flexibility topic area addresses managing customer and utility-owned distributed energy resources (DER) (i.e. batteries, electric vehicles, thermostats, etc.) to provide grid operational support. The ideal candidate will partner with stakeholders and subject matter experts in the planning, development, implementation and management of business unit goals, objectives, policies, and priorities related to advancing flexible loads for grid operations in a decarbonized future.
SMUD has committed to eliminating carbon emissions from our power supply by 2030 in our Zero Carbon Plan. A critical component of the plan is to scale up load flexibility, specifically in the form of Virtual Power Plant programs that provide services to meet SMUD's energy, capacity and reliability needs, to enable retirement and replacement of our existing thermal generation.
This position will provide expert contributions to the research, demonstration, evaluation, design and implementation of projects, programs and platforms enabling load flexibility to provide operational value to SMUD. GPRD is responsible for research that advances innovation in critical enterprise initiatives, furthers our position of industry influence, and prepares SMUD for long-term solutions and alternatives. This position is expected to have significant engagement with SMUD's Advanced Energy Solutions, Customer & Grid Strategy, Resource Planning, Energy Trading, Distribution Operations, Power Systems Operations, and IT groups and will also serve as a technical or functional expert for the emerging technologies in this program area and is accountable for staying current on technology, market, and policy advancements to inform near-term and long-term options to leverage distributed energy resources as part of SMUD's grid operations.
Note, this Job Description is utilized throughout SMUD, and therefore there is representation of power generation and protection systems; however, the focus of this GPRD Senior Electrical Engineering position is on integrating load flexibility capabilities of DER with SMUD's operations, electrical system, and management systems.
Provides electrical engineering design expertise and project coordination for major generation plant electrical modifications, equipment testing, repair and installation; provides engineering support for multiple generation units and related equipment, including hydroelectric, photovoltaic, wind and gas turbine units, to ensure reliable and efficient unit operations and meet SMUD power generation requirements.
Serves as an advanced journey level resource in a relevant professional discipline; works independently on projects of moderate complexity; exercises independent judgment and discretion; may serve in a Lead role and assist in planning, coordinating, prioritizing, monitoring and evaluating the work results in assigned area and in selecting, training, motivating, evaluating and developing lower-level personnel.
