    SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION:
    Due to the Manpower Shortage Recruitment, new appointments and current incumbents shall be compensated at Step 5 of the applicable salary range. This is in effect until June 30, 2024 or until it is determined that a shortage no longer exists, whichever is sooner.

    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation.  DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails.  Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 600,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion.     Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty.  In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:
    Performs electroencephalographic special procedures involving surgical, critically ill and terminal, premature and newborn infants, and adult patients and provides technical guidance to technicians performing standard electroencephalographic examinations.
     
    • Performs electroencephalographic examinations working with a surgeon in an operating room setting to record brain activity from the exposed cortex of patients.
    • Takes precautions in setting up equipment to insure that it is properly grounded and isolated from interference with other surgical electrical instruments and from contact with the patient.
    • Operates encephalograph, adjusting its sensitivity to reduce voltage to electrodes which have been placed in direct contact with the patient's brain by a physician.
    • Requests repositioning of electrodes by the surgeon to correct for observed pulse artifacts.
    • Performs status epilepticus monitoring of patients who are in a continuous state of recurring seizure.
    • Instructs nursing staff on care of electroencephalographic equipment.
    • Determines whether the source of seizures is general or localized by observing the electroencephalogram and the patient's motor activity.
    • Selects an appropriate montage and attaches electrodes to the patient's head to record electrical potentials, changing electrode placement to obtain an accurate graph using judgment based upon the technician's training and experience.
    • Recognizes onset of seizures by observing patient's motor and ocular activity and records these manifestations on the graph chart as they occur;
    • Collaborates with a physician in determining when sufficient diagnostic data has been recorded.
    • Performs electro-cerebral silence monitoring to determine the absence of brain activity in patients in irreversible coma.
    • Performs evoked potential procedures including neonatal audiometric procedures, visual evoked potentials, and other computer-based averaging techniques.
    • Provides technical guidance and on-the-job instruction to technicians in such tasks as the calibration, operation and care of encephalographic equipment and accessories.
    • Schedules patients for examinations and assists the supervising position in maintaining efficient work flow in unit operation.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Eighteen months of experience conducting standard encephalographic examinations and assisting in the performance of complex special procedures. Completion of a recognized training program in electroencephalographic technology may be substituted for six months of the required experience.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS III – MODERATE:
    Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    Special Requirement Information:
    Applicants who expect to substitute six (6) months of the required experience in electroencephalography MUST attach a legible copy of certificate of completion to the application AT THE TIME OF FILING.

    Examination Content:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based upon application information weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible register.

    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be added to the Eligible Register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months following the date of eligibility.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every six (6) months.

    Special Information:
    Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Vacancy Information:
    The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.
