Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee, the Endoscopy Technician assists in the preparation of and during Endoscopy procedures in various locations in the Hospital as directed. Duties are performed in strict compliance with the Hospital and Regulatory Agencies policies and procedures. The hours for this position are full time Monday-Friday 7:30 am- 4:00 pm, no weekends. The Endoscopy Technician position: Assists Endoscopists during procedures as directed. Interacts with staff, patients and their families, physicians, other healthcare providers and Hospital & University officials in a professional and courteous manner. Wipes/sanitizes carts, sinks and room after each procedure. Cleans, disinfects and stores endoscopes according to manufacturers directives and recommendations. Assists in supply inventory, establishing and maintaining adequate levels of supplies and equipment. Takes inventory of supplies on transport cart and in patient/exam rooms and restocks as necessary. Assists in the observation of patient pre and post procedure. Reports all observed changes and/or abnormalities in patients condition as directed. Performs personal hygiene activities for patient as needed. Sets up Endoscopy rooms for all procedures according to established guidelines. Reports equipment malfunctioning to appropriate staff and properly prepares items to be shipped out as necessary. Transports patients safely to and from the Endoscopy area as needed. Assists in the preparation and positioning of beds and orientating patient to room. Transports patient care equipment from one area to another, including assembling of such equipment. Assists with inspection and maintenance of endoscopes and equipment in the unit. Provides post-mortem care of deceased bodies such as labeling, wrapping dentures, and securing patient valuables. Orient and precept new Endoscopy Technicians Transports and handles specimens Participates in continuous quality improvement and departmental activities. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. Key competencies Include: Knowledge of the fundamentals of anatomy, Endoscopy procedures, aseptic techniques, surgical instruments and the care of surgical instruments. Working knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of the use and care of and proper sterilization methods of endoscopes. Competent use of steam sterilizer and Steris System One. Ability to clean and operate various scope cleaning systems. Knowledge of the proper care and use of video equipment. Ability to set up room and equipment required for various Endoscopy procedures. Ability to function as an individual and as part of a team. Ability to maintain a professional attitude at all times. Competence in both oral and written English. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patient information. Achieve appropriate Hospital performance, quality and productivity standards as established. Qualified candidates will possess: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Graduate of a training program for endoscopy technicians, or HUH training if available. One year experience working as an endoscopy technician in an acute care setting or Endoscopy Lab.
