Epidemiologist monitors and investigates known or suspected sources and transmission of communicable diseases. Collects, analysis, and interprets disease data using appropriate statistical and research methods. Being an Epidemiologist reviews sterilization, disinfection and waste control techniques and recommends changes as needed. Develops and coordinates effective and practical interventions and procedures to control and prevent disease in the community or facility. Additionally, Epidemiologist typically requires a master's degree of microbiology. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Epidemiologist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.      This position will support DAODAS efforts to understand the impact of substance use disorder in South Carolina, identifying areas at risk of increased disease prevalence, increased opioid overdoses, and infectious diseases related to drug use.
     
     The Epidemiologist will focus efforts on systematically collecting, reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting statistical data and preparing, publishing reports and maps using accurate and complete data on substance misuse and substance use disorder in South Carolina.  
     
     The ideal candidate will develop, perform, and report on vulnerability assessment findings and will work with all divisions in DAODAS, as well as external stakeholders, to develop plans to address substance use. Will evaluate and report on the efficacy of such implemented plans. 
    • Geospatial analysis of available data from DAODAS, other state agency partners, and secondary data sources to identify gaps in access to services, "hot spots" for health outcomes, overlays of substance use disorders and other outcomes/socioeconomic characteristics, and future areas of focus.
    • Statistical analysis and interpretation of available data to assess needs and target populations for further examination based on a spectrum of characteristics.
    • Evaluation of current and future programs to identify bright spots and areas of improvement.
    • Establish evaluation deliverables for awarded grants and establish priority areas, narratives for grants applications, initiatives and implementation.  
    • Production and presentation of original research manuscripts and brief reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals based on current and past DAODAS data.
    • Manage State Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup, SEOW. Oversee SEOW budget for data and statistical projects.
    • Produce State and County Epidemiological Profiles on Substance Use-Related Indicators in collaboration with fellow state agencies.
    • Design substance use studies, data surveillance, collection and statistical analysis.
    • High-level epidemiologic consultation and technical assistance
    • Represent the agency at various data committees and substance-use collaborative.  
    • Maintenance of accurate and complete project files
    • Other duties as assigned.
    Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or a closely related field
    • Demonstrate a solid understanding of the state of the art of epidemiology and statistics.
    • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of one or more of standard epidemiologic computer software such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, or Epi Info.
    • Demonstrate leadership qualities in identifying medical, statistical, surveillance, public health, and research needs; planning and conducting projects; and reporting results and findings.
