Summary            

The Aeronautical Sciences Instructor contributes to the mission of The Museum of Flight by providing education, mentorship, and leadership training to secondary education students. This position is part of a team responsible for facilitating either the Year 1 or Year 2 curriculum for the college-credit program Aeronautical Science Pathway program for high school Juniors and Seniors hosted by the Boeing Academy for STEM Learning at the Museum. Units of instruction in Year 1 include: Aviation History and Careers, Introduction to Unmanned Aerial Systems, Private Pilot Ground School, Aircraft Systems, Aviation Weather/Meteorology, and Aviation and Laws. The Year 2 program curriculum includes: Aerodynamics for Pilots, Airline Dispatch, Air Traffic Control (for pilots), Airline Operations, Aviation Safety & Human Factors, and Airport Management.

The Aeronautical Sciences Instructor helps develop leadership and career readiness skills in students by facilitating both mentoring and internships into the program. Having a continuum of programs available at the Museum, the Instructor strengthens coordination of these experiences across the Boeing Academy for STEM Learning’s programs at-large. This role is responsible for making learning relevant and applicable by connecting course content with the artifacts and exhibits within The Museum of Flight, as well as the many aviation and space companies, partners, and entities that surround Boeing Field and the Puget Sound community.

In addition to the school-year ASP program, this instructor teaches a summer Private Pilot Ground School course to rising 9th – 12th grade high school students. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Coordinate with Puget Sound Skill Center and Green River College staff, industry experts, and Museum education staff and volunteers to develop curriculum, course materials, and specific plans for teaching all embedded high school and college units of instruction within the Aeronautical Science Pathway program.
2. Guide each student to develop individual learning goals; differentiate instruction according to student goals and needs.
3. Facilitate 15 hours of instruction per week for the Aeronautical Science program that includes both in person and online experiences.
4. Co-advise a youth leadership component for the ASP program.
5. Assist with annual recruitment of students for the subsequent school year program.
6. Coordinate and manage guest speakers, class/instructional supports, and related volunteers.
7. Develop and maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
8. Facilitate a three-week summer session of Private Pilot Ground School and/or other summer classes that may be developed and assigned.
9. Align Museum assets (personnel, exhibits, collections, etc.) with/to ASP and other program curricula needs.
10. Collaborate with Boeing Academy for STEM Learning staff to guide the development of systemic leadership and career skill programming such as mentoring and internships.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in aviation, aeronautics, aviation transport, or other related field. A combination of education and relevant industry work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
• A minimum of three years of industry experience in aviation, preferably as a pilot.
• Experience teaching/facilitating aviation programs required, teaching high school students a plus. 

Knowledge

• Extensive knowledge of the aviation industry and career opportunities within it; network of aviation professionals who will support the program by serving as guest presenters, mentors to students, etc.
• Proven knowledge of project-based learning and best practices in teaching and learning, with ability to design and implement projects and experiences that actively engage students in solving authentic problems in aviation that simultaneously prepares them for the rigor of college-level studies and success in the workplace.
• Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development process and class management techniques.
• Proven knowledge of various assessment practices, particularly performance assessment, and ability to use assessment data to inform instruction.
• Knowledge of youth leadership development programs such as mentoring and internships, and the ability to integrate leadership, job search, and career advancement components into the program.

Skills

• Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to details; deadline driven.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook).

• Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment with a diverse group of individuals and departments.
• Demonstrates ability to network and collaborate effectively with college professors, industry experts, and other educators and administrators to ensure that all elements of course content are facilitated with accuracy and excellence.
• Ability to use technology to support remote learning instruction including Zoom and Canvas.

License & Certification

• Current Career & Technical Education (CTE) certificate, issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, to teach CTE exploratory and preparatory aviation subjects to secondary students; or willingness and eligibility to obtain a CTE certificate.
• FAA Flight Instructor Certification (CFI) required OR must possess FAA Basic Ground Instructor Certificate AND be willing to get CFI within 12 months.
• Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification. May be obtained within 60 days of hire through The Museum of Flight.
• Possess a valid driver license with an acceptable driving record.

• This full-time exempt position’s regular workweek is generally 2:30 to 6:30 pm, Monday through Thursday with flexible hours on Friday.
• The work schedule may be adjusted to start earlier or later, depending on scheduled events, classes and opportunities that may require meetings and coordination with others.
• Ability to work flexible schedule that includes late-afternoons and early evenings.
• Professional attire to reflect business casual in the aviation industry is required.
• Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
• Must have reliable transportation.

• Able to lift up to 30 lbs. unassisted.
• This position works with the public, outside vendors, in and around all Museum facilities (interior and exterior) and requires the ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
• This position also works under normal office conditions, including repetitive wrist and arm movement and long periods of sitting, or standing.
• The ability to focus, bend, carry, reach to the side, front and overhead, push, pull, walk, stand, twist and squat are occasional requirements in a normal office/classroom setting.

Paid-Time Off

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $87,130 to $131,500 depending on experience.
