Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
Demonstrate effective communication, listening, organization, and independence; demonstrate successful case management skills
Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships
Demonstrate clinical knowledge and professional competency appropriate for the provision of care specific to age, development, culture, ethnicity, language, education, socioeconomic status and condition-specific needs of patients, while maintaining a consistent level of patient care
Document and maintain accurate case records with full, objective, succinct and appropriate medical record documentation ensure confidentiality of information
Serve as a resource and effectively share clinical expertise with staff, referring providers and community
Identify, assess and make recommendations regarding solutions to patient concerns, questions, issues or problems and ethical or moral dilemmas that arise in routine patient care; recognize personal limitations in knowledge and capabilities in these areas and seek assistance from experts or refer clients as needed.
Quarterly Bariatric Management Committee meetings to collect input for all clinical and support staff at Memorial.
Assists in medical report preparation and maintains practice database. Ensures that program database is updated with all patient data to meet all BOLD (Bariatric Outcome Longitudinal Database) requirements as dictated by Center of Excellence (COE) requirements.
Participates in special projects identified by Memorial Bariatric Medical Director or other clinical projects as assigned. Responsible for maintaining the repository of clinical guidelines and SOP’s required to meet Center of Excellence guidelines. Develops and manages postoperative patient support group activities to help insure that patients comply with treatment guidelines.
Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION:
Master’s degree in genetic counseling or related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 1 year experience in genetic counseling
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
Certified or board eligible for certification as a genetic counselor by the American Board of Genetic
Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics
BLS certification required
