Education

Summary
Plans, develops, and produces a variety of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) graphic design products for scientific and administrative publications, exhibits, and multimedia displays. Specific duties include conducting communication needs assessments, interacting with customers to analyze and develop content, and advising customers on Lab publication policies and procedures.

Join the Multimedia Production (CEA-MP) group of Visual Designers at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to inform, engage, and inspire LANL’s workforce and visitors through the creation of dynamic, engaging, and on-brand signage, physical displays, and spaces.
Technical Knowledge
To be a successful candidate, you will have thorough understanding of user-centered design principles (environmental, interior, behavioral, etc.) and the ability to conceptualize, design, and install best-in-class physical experiences across multiple platforms and spaces; knowledge of wayfinding principles and best practices, and how to correctly sign buildings for occupants; demonstrated ability to distill complex information and requirements into elegant and intuitive designs; demonstrated knowledge of exhibit design, visual design, branding, typography, iconography, illustration, or infographics;
an understanding of exhibit design best practices and production methods (offset printing, dimensional signs, museum and display graphics, etc.); in-depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and working knowledge of other relevant design software; an ability to work with, support, and advance LANL’s existing design systems, style guides, and web component libraries; and experience maintaining and/or working within an existing brand design system.

In this role, you will need outstanding written and oral communication skills and the capacity to understand and interpret technical and scientific concepts.
Collaboration
Collaboration is critical in this position, so you will need experience working as a productive member of an interdisciplinary team, including the demonstrated ability to develop solutions for a wide range of complex design problems while effectively networking with peers inside and outside the organization.
Customer Relations
In this role, you must have a demonstrated ability to analyze stakeholder and user needs and determine the structure, content, and format of communication products that best meet those needs.
Project Management
Project management, including establishing and maintaining budgets and schedules, is an important part of this position. To be successful, you need to have personal project management experience in guiding strategic, multi-faceted, and iterative projects with a collaborative mindset.

Desired Qualifications
Cross-disciplinary skills, such as writing, editing, photography, UI/UX design, and fabrication will be helpful in this position. Deep knowledge of print production processes, materials, vendors, and interior design principles will be particularly useful.
