Groundskeeper cuts and maintains lawns and grass. Rakes leaves and cares for plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs. Being a Groundskeeper determines the appropriate plants or shrubs for walkways or garden areas. Provides grounds maintenance in all seasons. Additionally, Groundskeeper is responsible for snow and dirt removal. Keeps the grounds and environment of a facility in a clean, attractive, orderly, safe, and healthy condition. Operates light trucks and assorted power equipment. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on gardening and grounds equipment. May require horticultural training. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Groundskeeper works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Seasonal Groundskeeper

  • Performs a variety of unskilled manual labor to assist with routine maintenance, repair or other tasks specific to assigned division within the department; may operate motorized and/or non-motorized field, grounds and/or maintenance equipment.
    1. Mows, turf grass areas, prunes trees and shrubs, plants and maintains ornamental flowerbeds, and other duties as assigned;
    2. May maintain ball fields to include daily maintenance, game and tournament preparations and addition repair or enhancement projects.
    3. Performs other related functions as otherwise assigned, delegated or required by the PCF Superintendent or Lead Worker.
    Knowledge of: 
    • Basic lawn maintenance and power equipment used on the job
    Ability to: 
    • Handle the public in a courteous, friendly, and helpful manner;
    • Address multiple demands, or meet deadlines; 
    • Follow both verbal and written instructions and report operations both verbally or in written form;
    • Learn and follow routine procedures and to follow simple oral and written directions;
    • Learn the proper use of power equipment and to safely operate chainsaws, riding mowers, push mowers and line trimmers;
    • Represent Department/Division and the City of Sterling in a positive responsive manner to the public, fellow employees, volunteers, and supporters; 
    • Organize tasks and working environment to maximize efficiency;
    • Focus attention on tasks, which may be complex, routine, or repetitive, without losing concentration or becoming distracted by external activities;
    • Employ safety practices and procedures.
    Physical Requirements:
    1. Physical requirements include ability to extend hands(s) and arm(s) in any direction; pick, pinch, work with fingers and palm as well as whole hand; lift fifty (50) pounds; some lifting and carrying objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds; some pushing, pulling, and climbing; move about on foot to accomplish tasks; push/pull, lift, move, draw/drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion for extended periods of time.
    2. Physical mobility sufficient to carry on the inspection of the operation of equipment, infrastructure repairs and maintenance at various work sites. 
    3. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard devices requiring repetitive arm/hand movements. 
    4. Cognitive ability sufficient to perform and understand and apply simple to complex mathematical concepts.
    5. Visual acuity sufficient to perform work which deals largely with preparing/reviewing reports and records;
    6. Hearing acuity sufficient to receive, comprehend and understand detailed information through oral communications, and to make fine discriminations in sounds in order to perform duties safely.
    Working Conditions:  Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and fumes.
    Marginal Functions:
    1. May assist in repair of irrigation systems, playgrounds, buildings, and equipment;
    2. May assist in vehicle maintenance, tree plantings, opening and closing of graves, setting up for funerals and small construction projects;
    3. May work overtime, weekends, or holidays as needed.
    Education:   None
    Experience: Previous experience in grounds maintenance is desirable.
    Training/Certifications: None
