    Job Summary:
    The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian is responsible for all original and copy cataloging in the Furman University Libraries. This position works collaboratively with library colleagues to ensure discoverability of library materials in print and electronic formats. The ideal candidate will be comfortable cataloging in a mixed RDA/AACR2 environment using the MARC 21 standards, LC classification, and LCSH, and will demonstrate a willingness to learn other metadata standards and schema (e.g. Dublin Core, BIBFRAME).

    Furman University Libraries uses Library of Congress classification, and has a shared version of Alma and Primo (by Ex Libris) as their library services platform. This system is shared among 55 libraries in the statewide consortium PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries).

    This position is integral to meeting the Library's strategic diversity goals. The successful candidate will participate in rolling DEI audits of the library's physical and digital collections to ensure materials are described using inclusive language while avoiding potentially harmful or offensive terms.

    Job Description:

    This is a full-time non-tenure track faculty librarian position.

    Essential DutiesAs the libraries' only cataloger
    • Performs original and complex copy cataloging for all physical and digital formats using national systems and standards including MARC 21, AACR2, RDA, and LCSH.
    • Partners with Resource Management Department to ensure the accuracy of holdings in Furman's version of Alma, in the shared consortial Network Zone of Alma, and in OCLC.
    • Actively participates in DEI audits of physical and digital library collections including the assessment and remediation of potentially offensive, and/or harmful, language in cataloging records.
    • Manages electronic collections in Alma through the use of import profiles, batch uploads, and community zone activations.
    • Collaborates with Resource Management Department to troubleshoot access to electronic resources in Alma.
    • Creates, compiles, and distributes statistics using Alma Analytics.
    • Actively participates in deaccessioning projects: compiles relevant statistics, shares cataloging perspectives, participates in evaluation process, updates holdings in catalog, and coordinates physical processing of weeded materials.
    • Collaborates with the Digital Collections Center in the selection, assignation, and ongoing assessment of metadata standards for digital collections.
    • Creates and maintains catalog records for the University' institutional repository, FUSE, (powered by bepress).
    • Collaborates with Special Collections and Archives to establish and maintain metadata schema for born-digital materials.
    • Maintains currency of the curriculum collection according to the Library's agreement with Furman's Education Department.
    • Hires, trains, and supervises student assistant workers in the physical processing of library materials.

    As a member of the university faculty
    • Participates in Library Department activities such as strategic planning, committee work, meetings, and the library faculty promotion process.
    • Participates in professional activities including: joining professional organizations, attending conferences, serving on committees, attending training/workshops/webinars, giving presentations, and/or publishing research.
    • Serves on university faculty or administrative committees.
    • Attends faculty meetings and participates in faculty governance.
    • May choose to serve as an academic advisor.
    • May choose to teach courses such as May Experience
    Required Qualifications
    • Master's degree in library and/or information science accredited by the American Library Association.
    • Experience cataloging library materials in a mixed RDA/AACR2 environment using MARC 21 standards and Library of Congress classification.
    • Experience assigning Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress authority headings.
    • Experience using OCLC Connexion in the cataloging of materials.
    • Experience with and/or knowledge of cataloging music scores, books, and materials.
    • Familiarity with research related to identifying and remediating potentially offensive, and/or harmful language in cataloging records.
    • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving abilities.
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal skills.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Minimum of 2 years' experience cataloging library materials.
    • Experience with the library services platform software, Alma.
    • Experience cataloging rare books, documents, and items in a Special Collections environment.
    • Demonstrated understanding of LRM (FRBR/FRAD/FRSAD) principles.
    • Proficiency in a language other than English.
    • Knowledge of Dublin Core or other non-MARC metadata schema.

    Salary & Benefits
    Salary commensurate with experience (minimum $53,000). Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life plans, and a retirement plan (TIAA). Conference and professional development support will be a part of this position.
