The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library seeks a collaborative, service-oriented, self-motivated, and innovative Data Services Librarian to support faculty and students in the areas related to research data. This newly created position is responsible for developing and coordinating the library's research data services. The position also comes with the responsibility to teach a graduate-level course each semester in the ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program.
The successful candidate will be passionate about harnessing the potential of research data and be poised to take on the dual role inherent in this position: developing and coordinating the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library's research data services, and helping educate the next generation of librarians through developing and teaching graduate-level LIS courses in consultation with LIS program faculty. This role demands a blend of service-orientation, self-motivation, and innovation, geared toward supporting faculty and students in their research endeavors while contributing to the academic rigor of the university's curriculum.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Chair of the Science and Technology Reference Department in the library, the Data Services Librarian is an engaged and collaborative member of the Public Services Division. The Data Services Librarian will:
Serves as the Library's specialist and strategist for research data.
Keeps current with trends and practices related to research data and data services.
Develops and provides services that support faculty and students in the discovery, use, preservation, and visualization of data.
Proactively builds relationships and partnerships with students, faculty, and staff in the area of research data.
Assess campus data management needs, current initiatives, and future directions.
Develops and implements plans for the library to provide and sustain data services.
Designs and teaches data literacy and data management instruction sessions, workshops, and programs.
Teaches graduate-level courses (generally one 3 credit course per semester) related to technology and data in the Library and Information Science Program.
Contributes to department and library priorities.
Assists with other departmental and library projects as required.
Meets requirements for tenure and promotion, including professional development, research, and service.
Minimum Qualifications:
Librarian III
A master's degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or equivalent.
24 post-baccalaureate credits of academic study
Minimum three years of applicable experience
Knowledge of the trends and best practices in data management throughout the research lifecycle, including the usage of data repositories and public data sets.
Understanding of data ethics and privacy, in both the research and educational contexts.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Librarian IV
A master's degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or equivalent.
Second master's degree in specialized subject area.
Minimum seven years of applicable experience.
Knowledge of the trends and best practices in data management throughout the research lifecycle, including the usage of data repositories and public data sets.
Understanding of data ethics and privacy, in both the research and educational contexts.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
College course work or experience appropriate to the position (e.g., advanced degree in a data-related field).
Experience with conducting library outreach and engagement with students, faculty, and campus collaborators to support research and instructional endeavors.
Experience with assessing programs or services in higher education or in libraries.
Experience with teaching at the university level, preferably teaching credit courses or teaching related to data management, information technology or data literacy.
Experience with methods, tools and skills in data science and data management (e.g. programming languages such as Python or R), and willingness to learn new skills or related technologies.
Ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
