Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Preparation of laboratory specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist through the use of microtomy, special staining, histochemistry and other appropriate techniques.
High School graduate or GED equivalent. Successful completion of Histotechnician program or equivalent. State licensure as a Histotechnician. Minimum of 36 hours of continuing education within 3 years, thus 12 hours per year. Distribution is as follows: 1 hour of safety, 2 hours in histology and the remaining hours may be in an area of specialty, management, education or other related laboratory areas of interest. Utilizes various laboratory instruments and equipment according to manufacturer's instructions and departmental policy and procedure. Utilizes standard office equipment. Thorough knowledge of medical terminology.
