Summary:

Trainee position for Histology Technician (HT). Participates in training program, learns and makes progress in performance of standard and specialized laboratory procedures in preparation of tissue and biological materials for microscopic examination by staff pathologists, under supervision, with goal of meeting requirements to convert to Histology Technician within 1 year or less.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Formal Education Required:
a. Associate Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field of study

2. Experience & Training Required:
a. A minimum of 12 continuing education credits are required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment

3. Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
a. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed laboratory procedures and instructions
b. Manual dexterity sufficient to perform delicate precise dissection procedures, operate cutting instrumentation (microtome), fixing and staining equipment, mix and prepare stains and solutions, and perform preventive and daily maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
c. Skill in use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department
d. Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity

4. Level of Physical Demands:
a. Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
