    Senior Director of Human Resources

    AJM Packaging Corporation

    Southgate, MI

    Salary:  $200,000 - $275,000

    Bonus:  Performance Based

    Position Overview –

AJM Packaging Corporation, one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of disposable paper products, including a broad range of both plain and printed paper plates, cups, bowls and bags, is currently conducting a comprehensive search for an exceptionally talented and capable individual to direct and manage its’ nationwide Human Resources activities.  Reporting directly to the President/Chief Executive Officer and working onsite from one of several metro Detroit area locations, the successful applicant will be responsible for all exempt and non-exempt personnel, processes, functions and administration in ten (10) company locations across five (5) states.

It’s not an easy job, and it’s not for everyone.  Many will undoubtedly have the requisite work experience and academic credentials to apply, but only a select few will likely have the critically important personal attributes, soft skills and intangibles to prosper and thrive in this environment.  In our judgement, the successful candidate will distinguish themselves from other applicants by their confident demeanor, “can do” attitude, unrelenting passion and drive and, most importantly, by their innate ability to command respect, inspire and lead.

    Responsibilities & Duties

    • Exempt and non-exempt Full Life Cycle Recruiting, Learning and Development, Compensation and Benefits, Employee Experience and Engagement, Performance Management, Health and Safety, Wellness, HRIS, People Analytics, Organizational Planning and Development, Change Management and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

    • Personally interview and hire all Human Resources functional department heads, key stakeholders and direct reports.  Set goals and objectives, monitor progress, mentor, coach, evaluate and reward this same constituency within the context of the company’s Performance Management System.
    • Provide strategic long-term, as well as tactical short-term, leadership, direction and supervision for all Human Resources initiatives and personnel.
    • Establish, monitor and share meaningful KPI’s for all Human Resources functions and critically important touchpoints, milestones and trends using best-in-class processes and technology to inform Management and key stakeholders of progress, problems, successes and failures.
    • Stay abreast of new trends and adopt best-in-class processes, technology and solutions, including, by way of example only, Mobile, Data Driven, Skills Based and e-Recruiting, Blockchain Verification, Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics, Employer Branding, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), Robotics and Automation, Generative AI, CRM, HRIS, TQM, Job Evaluation and Scoring, Performance Management Systems, Pattern and Gap Analysis, Strategic and Predictive Analytics, e-learning, Learning Management Systems (LMS), Upskilling and Reskilling, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and Employee Resource Groups (ERG), in furtherance of all company goals and objectives.
    • Develop and promote creative and resourceful problem solving techniques and approaches in finding solutions to Human Resources, cross-functional and broader corporate problems and challenges.
    • Develop, approve and monitor annual Human Resources budget and take all necessary and appropriate corrective action based on monthly review and analysis of variances.
    • Work cross-functionally and collaboratively with senior management and key stakeholders to develop and achieve all Human Resources team goals and objectives and optimize corporate performance and customer satisfaction.
    • Champion continuous and, when practicable, step change improvement and best-in-class performance in all Human Resources processes, technology solutions and personnel using various lean and other techniques, including, but not limited to, Kanban, Kaizen, 5S, 5Why, DMAIC, PDCA, Standard Work, Loss & Waste Analysis, Process & Value Stream Mapping.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Human Resources, Business or related field from an accredited four (4) year college or equivalent combination of on-the-job training, professional development and education. Graduate level degree preferred but not required.
    • 12-15 years of progressive Human Resources experience in fast paced, high volume manufacturing or similar environments and at least four (4) years in leadership roles with multi-site responsibilities.
    • Results driven self-starter able to work independently with minimal assistance and direction to make decisions, solve problems, achieve corporate goals and objectives and, most importantly, to inspire and ead.
    • “Hands-on”, action oriented, creative and resourceful, firm but fair, and, most importantly, consistent. Does what’s best for the company, not what’s easy or popular.
    • Unique ability to see the big picture and work strategically at a very high level with C-Suite personnel and other Senior Managers but, when necessary and appropriate, can roll up your sleeves and work “hands-on” blocking and tackling to get the job done.
    • Strong management, administrative and organizational skills, able to multi-task and stay cool under pressure.
    • Excellent verbal as well as written communication and interpersonal skills, able to relate to and work with people at all levels and from all walks of life, either one-on-one, in groups or in teams.
    • Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft Office 365 skills (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
    • Ability to travel, as necessary and appropriate, to company locations and other domestic venues to lead and manage Human Resources staff, work cross-functionally with other departments and participate in company-wide initiatives.

    About Us –

AJM was founded in 1957 as a distributor of paper, plastic and foil packaging and consumer disposable products, as well as, office and cleaning supplies and equipment by three (3) Detroit area brothers operating out of a small facility on Detroit’s southwest side.  Over nearly three (3) decades of hard work, occasioned by consistent growth, frequent successes and ocassional disappointments, the company gradually transitioned out of distribution and evolved into a major paper products manufacturer, today employing nearly 3,000 people and operating eight (8) manufacturing and five (5) warehouse/distribution facilities strategically located throughout the United States.

Some things have undoubtedly changed since AJM was founded on Detroit’s southwest side, but the brothers’ commitment to each other and to their customers and employees, alike, has not wavered and is deeply embedded in the company’s DNA.  So, too, is their entrepreneurial spirit, “can do” attitude and singular focus on the value proposition that has fueled their success from the very beginning.  We’re still family owned and operated, still headquartered in the metro Detroit area and still proud to be manufacturing our entire line of retail packaging and consumer disposable products in the good old USA.

    Career Development –

At AJM, we realize we will only go as far as our employees can take us and, for that reason, we invest millions of dollars every year on both classroom and on-the-job training to develop our employees’ skills and promote a culture of learning and continuous improvement.  There are no barriers to impede your progress here and no ceilings to halt your advance.  You’ll control your own destiny, and we will help you reach your full potential with both in-house development programs and tuition reimbursement for undergraduate and graduate level college studies.  Join our team and see where your AJM journey takes you!
