Description
Position Overview:
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the operations and staff of the accounting department and reporting directly to the EVP of Finance. The Controller is also responsible for ensuring accurate and timely preparation of monthly financial statements to be issued to management by the 15th of the month, and for annual financial statement reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and other accounting rules.
- Oversee accounting & financial transactions of other depts.
- Hedge accounting.
- Monitor, coach, and train staff.
- Carry out due diligence related to vendor management.
- Prepares monthly financial statements including income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement.
- Accounting, Financial and Regulatory Reporting.
- Ensures an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close.
- Management and oversight of the Accounting Software System (AMB).
- Review and corrects accounting journal entries as needed after review of monthly reconciliations performed by accounting staff.
- Maintains a thorough understanding of financial reporting and general ledger structure.
- Responds to inquiries regarding financial results and special reporting requests from the Executive team.
- Works with the Executive Team and external auditors to ensure a clean and timely year end audit.
- Performs the appropriate quarterly computations to ensure compliance with regulatory financial covenants.
- Reviews banking, trust accounts and warehousing accounts, including deposits, reconciliations, advances, haircuts, lines of credit, pair-off payments, and loan loss reserves to ensure compliance with bank specified or regulatory requirements.
- Assists the EVP of Finance in the monthly monitoring and reporting of debt covenant compliance.
- Reviews and approves invoice report for accounting manager.
- Monitors receivables monthly for signs of delinquency and takes appropriate action.
- Supports reconciliation of all commissions paid as is compared to what was accrued as “commissions payable”.
- Prepares government, tax, and regulatory filings at city, county, state, and federal levels.
- Reviews and approves monthly and quarterly bank compliance reports.
- Develops and implements more efficient procedures and workflows.
- Collaborates extensively with the other department executives.

- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- BA/BS in Business with an emphasis in Accounting, CPA (required)
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in mortgage banking or with an IMB (Independence Mortgage Bank) as a controller, or commensurate level of experience in another industry or public accounting. Experience of Mortgage Servicing Accounting preferred.
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, general accounting, and financial planning.
- Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
- Knowledge of relevant accounting and loan origination software
- System conversion and management
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office
- Ability to work with large datasets.
- Familiarity with intercompany consolidation and ownership structures
- Timely communication and response times according to department standards
Travel:
- Up to 10% of the time will travel internationally between United States and Mexico.
Language:
- English preferred, Bi-Lingual (English/Spanish) desired.
