    Description
    GSL is a dynamic meteorology research environment using both real-time and retrospective data processing. The IT Engineer will evaluate existing and new GSL applications. This position requires a combination of strategic vision, technical skills, collaboration skills, and excellent communications skills. The incumbent will interface with all levels of management and technical engineers and must be adept at translating business needs into technical designs with the ability to communicate at both business and technical levels. This is a technical position requiring hands-on development in various cloud environments to allow science division IT staff to easily deploy applications and services needed to meet GSL science requirements in a secure CI/CD environment.
    Responsibilities:
    • Evaluate and maintain current infrastructure applications and develop enhancements and updates as necessary.
    • Work with multiple development teams to determine if applications are cloud ready.
    • Assist teams in making on-premise applications functional in the cloud.
    • Program web application solutions in accordance with established acceptance criteria as determined by the customer.
    • Participate in product discussions, including product strategy and design, with internal teams to determine how to deliver the best experience for users.
    • Communicate codebase capabilities and constraints to the product team to ensure requirements align with cloud capabilities and policies.
    • Participate in cloud project reviews as an important part of the development process, so developers have an opportunity to share and learn from their peers in a collaborative environment.
    • Experience with web application development, architecture, APIs, and microservices.
    • Demonstrated experience with custom API integration support; must be able to support integration with REST APIs.
    • Deep technical understanding of modern web standards and cross-browser compatibility, behaviors, ADA compliance, semantic markup, and best practices.
    • Accustomed to bug tracking, continuous integration, and task management software.
    • Proficient with build, deployment, and release automation and orchestration.
    • Competent with database engineering and manipulating relational databases.
    • Understanding of technologies such as Kubernetes, cloudfront and lambda.
    • Familiar with source control and code management
    • Generate monthly status reports
    • Generate architecture documentation
    Requirements
    • Minimum Education: BS/BA degree (Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent)
    Desired Qualifications
    • Familiarity with developing applications using API and user interfaces
    • Familiarity with the following technologies: Python, Django, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, GIT, SQL, NGINX/Apache
    • Data Management and familiarity with SQL is a plus.
    • Extensive programming and scripting skills, both traditional and cloud-based while working in a secured compute environment
    • Experience with DevSecOps and CI/CD strategies
    • Experience assisting traditional developers to retool existing on-premise applications to be deployed in cloud environments
    • Familiarity with cloud-based data distribution (AWS Fargate, Cloudfront, etc) is a plus.
    • Experience collecting requirements and performing detailed systems analysis
    • Applicant must have experience with heterogeneous computing environments both public and private, including working knowledge of DNS, TCP/IP, firewalls, and routing concepts
    • Must possess creativity, strong organizational skills, and planning skills
    • Experience/skills in setting priorities and managing multiple tasks simultaneously
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Identity management across clouds experience a plus
