    Purpose Statement

    The job of Director of Technology is done for the purpose/s of planning, implementing, directing, and maintaining the district's application and use of technology within the curriculum and business applications; and evaluating and providing recommendations regarding complementing classroom instruction and business information systems with software applications and computer technology.

     

    This job reports to the Chief Operations Officer.

     

    Essential Functions

    • Coordinate a variety of technology-related projects and activities (e.g. project roll-outs, etc.) for meeting department goals and ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
    • Design training materials for training personnel in the use of computer applications.
    • Develop technology plans (e.g. project roll-outs, technology upgrades, etc.) for ensuring technology projects meet District requirements.
    • Maintain computer hardware and software applications as needed for ensuring availability of instructional materials and district operations.
    • Monitor fund balances of assigned programs and related financial activity for ensuring that allocations are accurate, related revenues are generated, expenses are within budget limits, and fiscal practices are followed.
    • Oversee assigned work activities and projects (e.g. project-rollout, systems upgrade, staff training, etc.) for providing guidance and support to other staff, and to ensure completion of projects within established guidelines.
    • Participate in a variety of meetings (e.g. staff meetings, conferences, in-services, etc.) for conveying and gathering information required to perform functions.
    • Perform personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget.
    • Prepare a variety of materials (e.g. reports, procedures, manuals, etc.) for documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
    • Research a variety of technology related topics (e.g. growing trends in technology, possible upcoming government regulations, technology upgrades, technology solutions to current district needs, etc.) for previewing products and providing recommendations to enhance district technology operations.
    • Respond to inquiries from a variety of stakeholders (e.g. department technicians, administrators, etc.) for providing information and direction.
    • Serve as liaison to a variety of stakeholders (e.g. vendors, administrators, etc.) for conveying and receiving information and coordinating district activities.
    • Directs the development, implementation and evaluation of the District administrative and educational technological plans and programs.
    • Assists with the demographic studies of the District.
    • Directs cost analysis of user initiated requests for modifications in programming and hardware.
    • Directs and develops needs assessment of administrative and educational computing.
    • Maintains current knowledge of software application programs and operation requirements for administrative computing on the VMWare environment, its servers and personal computers.
    • Assists in working with other governmental agencies in regards to data processing.
    • Assists other departments in using data and information from the VMWare server farm and administrative personal computers.
    • Directs the development, coordination, and hands-on support of installation and use of local area networks.
    • Provides leadership for collecting, organizing, and sharing information through technology.
    • Provides technical direction for managing information to all systems within the organization through: planning, training and evaluation of technology as a tool.
    • Directs technical support for student attendance, personnel, accounting, confidential record maintenance and related compliance functions.
    • Directs and coordinates acquisition of hardware for educational and management functions.
    • Supervises, evaluates, and provides leadership for building a cohesive team within the technical staff.
    • Directs and assists with routine technology support functions such as:
      • Installation of new software/hardware
      • Inventory control of hardware/software and related supplies
      • Generating cyclic reports – staff, students, etc.
      • Server/administrative PE communication
      • File sharing across multiple platforms
      • Copying data to different media
      • Review of new tools and alignment to current resources and future tasks
    • Prepares annual E-Rate applications. Submits technology plan to State Department of Education for approval.  Oversees vendor compliance with E-Rate requirements.  Staff proponent for all E-Rate issues.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Knowledge and experience with large networks.  LAN, WAN, Network IP Addressing and subnets, VLANS, Fiber Connections, Fire Walls, NAT.
    • Cyber Security current tools used to monitor network and traffic.  Teach employees how to mitigate cyber-attacks through email and other means.
    • Knowledge of web filtering and web safety for children under 17. 
    • Experience with disaster recovery and backup procedures.

     

    Other Functions

    • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

    KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.  Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include current generation and emerging networking systems; server systems; and associated programming languages.

     

    ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes.     Responsibility

    Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; managing a department; supervising the use of funds.     Work Environment

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing.  This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

     

    Experience: Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in the development, installation and maintenance of information systems.

     

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate for this position (Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Management, Educational Technology or other equivalent disciplines), preferred.

     

    Equivalency: High school diploma along with experience with increasing levels of responsibilities in technology.
