Assistant Director and Head of Research, Teaching and Collections

  • The Assistant Director and Head of Research, Teaching & Collections (RTC) is a key figure in the library's leadership structure, reporting directly to the Director of Library Services. He/she provides senior  leadership within the RTC department, overseeing and mentoring librarians directly. Works closely with the Director and other leaders, contributing to the development of library-wide policies and strategies. Specifically, crafting strategic policies for the department/area by gathering input from RTC staff and affiliated librarians. Supports and enables initiatives across all segments of RTC, including branch librarians, and advocates for their interests. Fosters collaborative efforts across the campus, particularly with faculty, aiming to integrate library research and instructional programs. Provides strategic vision for developing academic collections that align with the library and college's mission. This involves collaborating with Content and Metadata Services and liaison librarians. Leads assessment efforts for RTC, working with the Office of Assessment, and promotes outreach efforts to engage the Holy Cross community with RTC services and library collections. Coordinates library collaboration with academic offices and programs, especially those involved in instructional and curricular activities. Provides expertise in research, instruction, and collection development. Serves as a liaison to one or more academic departments, advising on collections and resources. Participates in facilities planning, considering emerging pedagogical practices and collection building needs. Engages in ongoing professional development, scholarly publishing, and stays updated on best practices in the field.
     
    Major Areas of Responsibility

    • Reports to the Director of Library Services
    • Leads and supervises librarians and staff in RTC.
    • Supports and promotes holistic library wide approaches to the strategic implementation of services, staff, and resources in support of research, teaching, and collections.
    • Leads the development, assessment, and evaluation of research and instruction related work across libraries.
    • Provides strategic vision and leadership in collection development and evaluation
    • Leads in the broader academic engagement of the library with faculty and students and in collaboration with other academic offices and services.
    • Supervises the work of librarians and staff in the Research, Teaching & Collections division
    • Develops the libraries’ research, instruction, and collection development programs, both comprehensively as an overarching college initiative, and individually by discipline, aligning with the subject liaison program
    • Cultivates the relationship between teaching faculty and librarians
    • Crafts strategies for delivering in-depth research collaboration with students and faculty
    • Crafts strategies for delivering in-depth instruction in support of faculty development
    • Mentor the work of RTC committees and commission projects as appropriate
    • Oversees assessment strategies and initiatives for RTC
    • Chairs committees and working groups as appropriate
    • Serves as liaison, including collection development, to one or more departments
    • Provides instruction for research in all disciplines, with emphasis on liaison departments
    • Participates in professional development and scholarship
    • Other duties as assigned
    Minimum Qualifications
     
    • Required: ALA-accredited MLS
    • Required: Demonstrated management, supervisory, and leadership abilities, especially in higher education or a related field
    • Required: 5-7 years of increasingly complex and responsible experience in the Research and Instruction division of an academic library or equivalent
    • Required: 3-5 years of collection development or acquisitions knowledge and experience
    • Required: Proven commitment to nurturing staff development and professional growth
    • Required: Demonstrated pedagogical skills
    • Required: Budgetary experience
    • Preferred: Second master’s degree
    • Preferred: Publication or presentation experience in the higher education environment
    • Understanding of assessment practices in higher education and academic libraries
    • Understanding of copyright law, intellectual freedom, and ethical use of information
    • Excellent communication skills, and ability to work well with colleagues
