    Job Description:

    APPOINTMENT: August 17, 2023

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • The successful candidate must have a commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) level.
    • Teaching responsibilities include Principles of Chemistry lecture, organic chemistry labs and physical chemistry lab, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as other courses as appropriate.
    • Other responsibilities will include service on committees and general instrument coordination and maintenance.
    • Applicants must have a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) levels.
    • The WIU Department of Chemistry maintains state-of-the-art instrumentation (SEM, GC/LCMS-QP2010 Plus from Shimadzu, FT-NMR, AA, FT-IR, UV-Vis, HPLC, Fluorescence spectrometer, etc.) and electronic classrooms which provide great learning and research opportunities for our students.

    Requirements:

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Ph.D. in Chemistry, or a MS in Chemistry with significant teaching experience.
    • Experience with common chemistry laboratory instrumentation.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Instrumental expertise in NMR, MALDI mass spectrometry, and Raman FT-IR, as well as GC and HPLC, high resolution mass spectrometry, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy.
    • Ability to contribute to a new option in material science, including polymer chemistry and carbohydrate chemistry.

    For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of appointment.

    THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Chemistry offers the American Chemical Society certified B.S. degree programs in chemistry, biochemistry and a pharmacy option. In addition, the Department of Chemistry offers a M.S. in Chemistry, as well as a B.S. degree program in forensic chemistry. The Department also offers a teacher certification option for the B.S. Chemistry degree. There are ten full-time faculty members, all of whom have doctoral degrees from major universities and serve over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 30 graduate students, as well as 150 minors.
