Instructor - Legal Support teaches courses in the discipline area of legal support services. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Legal Support provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Legal Support typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research.     Other Conditions: Special/Outreach funds, to begin August 2024. Renewal contingent upon satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and program needs. Selectee is required to pass a criminal background check and complete Title XI training.
     
    Duties and Responsibilities
    Teach special education courses and supervise teacher candidates on all islands via a variety of delivery modes (in-person, distance); Participate in on-going curriculum and program development activities; provide service to the department and college; other duties as assigned.
     
    Instructor Minimum Qualifications

    1. Master's degree in special education or in a closely related field from an accredited four-year college or university. 
    2. Classroom experience as a certified special educator, teaching students with extensive support needs (intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, and autism). 
    3. Broad knowledge of special education instructional methods and assessment for students with extensive support needs. 
    4. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated. 
     
    Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications
    (in addition to the Instructor Minimum Qualifications)
    1. Doctorate degree in special education or in a closely related field from an accredited four-year college or university. 
    2. Evidence of research or scholarly activities.  
     
    Desirable Qualifications
    1. Experience providing professional development or university coursework for special educators; 
    2. Knowledge of UHM special education teacher training programs; 
    3. Experience teaching special education in Hawaii 
    4. Experience with nontraditional university student populations from racially/ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
