    POSITION FUNCTION

    This individual carries out activities related to the Institute for Plastic Surgery research program,
    as directed by the Research Laboratory Coordinator, Director of Basic Science Research, and
    Faculty principal investigators in the Institute for Plastic Surgery.

    The position may be filled as a Researcher II (annual starting salary range: $33,000 - $42,000),
    a Researcher III (annual starting salary range: $36,000 – $43,000), or a Researcher IV (annual
    starting salary and is dependent upon experience and qualifications (see below).

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

    The Researcher will report to the Research Laboratory Coordinator. The Research Lab
    Coordinator reports to the Director of Basic Science Research. The Director of Basic Science
    Research reports to the Chief of the Institute for Plastic Surgery and/or Chairman of Surgery.
    The Chair of Surgery reports to the Dean and Provost.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    TIME COMMITMENT

    I. Administration 15_%

    1.Organizes and maintains records for activities related to molecular and cellular biology,
    biochemical assays, small animal surgery, and other research projects associated with
    the Institute.

    2. Assists in acquisition of supplies and equipment necessary for conducting research
    projects.

    II. Teaching/Supervisory 10_%

    1.Provides technical guidance and assistance to medical students, residents, research
    fellows, or other approved personnel laboratory techniques, animal preparation and
    other experimental techniques.

    2.Assists in instructing the “Introduction to Microsurgical Techniques” elective to medical
    students.

    III. Research 75 %

    1. Under the direction of the Research Laboratory Coordinator, Director of Basic Science
    Research, and/or Principal Investigators, carries out activities of the Plastic Surgery
    research program

    2. Responsible for acquisition of data, compiling, synthesizing, and statistically
    analyzing data emanating from laboratory studies as directed by the Research
    Laboratory Coordinator, Director of Basic Science Research, and/or Principal
    Investigators.

    3. Assists the investigator(s) with the preparation of scientific abstracts, poster sessions
    and professional publications.

    4. As directed by the Research Laboratory Coordinator, Director of Basic Science
    Research, and/or Principal Investigators, assists in the coordination of experimental
    programs among different research laboratories relating to Plastic Surgery research.

    5. Initiates animal preparation for surgical procedures and performs surgical procedures
    as directed.

    6. Instructs residents, fellows, and medical students in laboratory and microsurgical
    techniques.

    7. Operates and maintains research equipment; orders equipment and supplies as
    directed; sets up necessary equipment for experimentation and/or biochemical assay
    techniques; and preparation of preparation of chemical and drug solutions.

    IV. Service 0_%

    AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY

    This person may work independently to a certain degree (depending on Researcher level) in
    performing experiments and may make recommendations to the Laboratory Coordinator. This
    person will not be making any decision regarding hiring/firing/discipline decisions.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.

    The position may be filled as a Researcher II, Researcher III or Researcher IV, depending on

    the following qualifications:
    Researcher II: MA/MS degree, or a BA/BA degree plus at least two years relevant experience.

    Researcher III: MA/MS degree in appropriate field and at least two years relevant experience,
    or a BA/BA degree and a minimum of six years’ experience in relevant field.

    Researcher IV: Ph.D. or MA/MS degree in appropriate field and minimum of four years relevant
    experience or a BA/BS degree with eight years of relevant experience.

    ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Participates in meetings, trainings and other environmental, health and safety activities as
    required by SIU School of Medicine.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    This position requires working with animals of various species, therefore this person must be
    able to work around all animals. See attached Physical and Environmental Requirements form.
