    Brief Overview of type of faculty position we are seeking

    The Department of Psychology at Simmons University seeks adjunct instructors to teach Psychopathology & Mental Health (previously Abnormal Psychology; PSYC 231), Health Psychology (PSYC 232), and/or Drugs & Behavior (PSYC 244) during the SP23 semester.

    The Spring 2023 semester service dates are January 17, 2023 - May 12, 2023 and classes will be held in person. Instructors are also expected to be available to meet with students for office hours, either through video/zoom calls or in person, as needed.

    Course Descriptions

    PSYC 231 Psychopathology and Mental Health

    Explores the nature and dynamics of psychological disorders including anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, mood disorders, and addiction. Emphasizes the issue of individual psychological growth and the interrelationship of normal and abnormal phenomena.

    PSYC 232 Health Psychology

    Explores the biological, psychological, and social factors related to health and illness. Includes discussion of the biological factors involved in prevention and treatment; the role of personal factors such as lifestyle choices, stress, addictions, and coping mechanisms; and social factors related to compliance and health care delivery.

    PSYC 244 Drugs and Behavior

    Explores the psychological, biological, and societal factors that influence drug use. Focuses on the neurochemical bases of drug action and the experimental paradigms used in studying the behavioral effects of drugs. Topics include illegal and legal drugs, including medications for mental illness.

    Responsibilities: The adjunct instructor will be responsible for lecturing and leading in weekly class discussions. Classes will run from January 17th to May 5th.

    Requirements:
    Master's degree required; Ph.D. preferred.

    Teaching experience is preferred, at either the college or high school level.
