Collects, prepares, and tests samples and records measurements or observations. Being a Laboratory Assistant prepares reports detailing results and conclusions, applications, and methodology. Conducts routine maintenance and safety checks on lab equipment to ensure working order. Additionally, Laboratory Assistant assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials and the ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for collection of specimens for lab testing on inpatients, outpatients, emergency room and clinic patients. This position is responsible for application of learned techniques necessary to obtain quality specimens to aid the techs in reliable results. The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for developing computer skills for the Laboratory Information System and complying with all regulatory requirements, including Lab Compliance. This position requires adept social skills and teamwork. The Lab Assistant is responsible for assisting the tech with certain preliminary routines including instrument maintenance, some QC, instrument startup routines, daily routines (temp checks, work area disinfection, etc.). The Lab Assistants may be trained to do non-waived and limited waived testing. Employee is responsible for continuing education requirements and license renewal.

WORK HOURS:
Employee will be provided a routine 8 or 12 hour schedule, plus at least 1 weekend a month and equal share of holidays, with occasional rotation to other shifts to meet staffing needs. Shift hours may occasionally be cut or overtime required in accordance with patient volume and staffing. The employee may be assigned to work specific areas, or may rotate as needed. The employee may be specifically assigned to work at the North Campus, Main Campus, or to switch to meet the needs of the lab.
