THE POSITION
Under general direction, the Librarian (Supervising) plans, organizes, supervises and participates in the work of a division or a library branch of the County Library System. The Librarian (Supervising) oversees budgets for materials and supplies; has regular contact with the general public, outside organizations, and other County/City personnel in connection with library activities and operations; develops programs of community interest and serves as a member of the department’s supervisory team.
The role of the Librarian (Supervising) is characterized by the combination of first-line supervisory duties and responsibilities inclusive of interpreting, enforcing and carrying out assigned duties within the framework of established County and library policy coupled with the performance of professional librarian work. This work requires a broad knowledge of contemporary professional methods and techniques to serve a variety of customers with differing needs.
The Librarian (Supervising) receives direction from a Library Branch Manager, Deputy Director of Library or Support Services, or Assistant Director of Library Services.
The Librarian (Supervising) exercises supervision over professional, technical, and clerical staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Experience: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library Science or related degree from an accredited college or university is required (see Document Submittal section of this job announcement for instructions on submitting education documentation); AND
Education/Training: Three years of experience performing professional librarian duties.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
- Independent travel is required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license may be

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS
To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE (GENERALLY COPY 4), MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BY THE APPLICATION REVIEW DEADLINE. Applicants who have a service-connected disability must also submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service-connected reasons.
Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under conditions discharge shall receive five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans rated at not less than 30% disability shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score.
