Community & Oral History Archivist (Assistant Librarian)

    Utah State University (USU) Libraries seek a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented professional to serve as the Community & Oral History Archivist within the Libraries’ Special Collections & Archives (SCA) section. The Archivist will be responsible for coordination of SCA’s community outreach and engagement activities, including programs and events. They will actively cultivate new relationships and promote ongoing relationships with community partners across the region. In conjunction with this role, the Archivist will serve as SCA’s oral history specialist, ensuring that the unit’s efforts in planning and executing oral history projects follow professional standards and best practices. The Archivist is also responsible for developing, preserving, and providing access to the Libraries’ Fife Folklore Archive (FFA) collections, with a focus on the Intermountain West. The archivist will actively engage university and community partners to acquire new materials, provide reference services, and promote the Fife collections through instruction, exhibition, programming, and outreach.

     

    The FFA is one of the largest repositories of American folklore in the United States. Established in 1972, the Archives comprise an integral part of USU's cultural heritage resources. The FFA is named for folklorists Austin E. and Alta S. Fife, Utahans who helped shape the field of folklore and worked to preserve the folk expressions of the American West. The FFA is home to more than seventy collections, including ethnographic collections, student fieldwork collections, and Austin and Alta Fife's fieldwork collections. SCA is also the home to the historical American Folklore Society Manuscript Collection. The successful applicant will work in a collaborative environment with support for professional growth and development.

     

    USU Libraries is currently wrapping up a realignment process that will position the Libraries to be agile and at the forefront of changing user needs. We anticipate this will be completed Fall 2023. Please note that these new alignments may not be reflected on the Libraries’ website or public presences until the end of the process. Current information on the new organizational structure can be requested from Clint Pumphrey or Andrea Payant. The successful applicant will report to the chair overseeing curation, outreach, and community engagement.

     

    The position is a 12-month, tenure track faculty appointment with rank as Assistant Librarian. The position is open fall 2023 and the start date is negotiable.

    Responsibilities

    75% Librarianship Responsibilities

    • Community Engagement
      • Work in partnership with curator team to coordinate community engagement with SCA’s resources, programs, and services.
      • Develop collaborative relationships with Intermountain West communities and work to identify, develop, preserve, and support access to archival collections that document their histories and shared experiences.
      • In coordination with Libraries’ marketing staff, suggest ways to promote SCA’s materials, services, exhibitions, and events.
    • Oral History Specialist
      • Serve as a resource to the curator team in the planning and execution of oral history projects documenting various historical topics.
      • Work with curator team to ensure current and legacy oral history projects conform to professional standards and best practices.
    • Fife Folklore Archives
      • Oversee the FFA collection development program.
      • Work with the processing team to accession, arrange, and describe incoming collections in both tangible and electronic formats according to established processing workflows and professional standards.
      • Provide in-depth research assistance to users of the FFA collections.
      • Work to promote the use of FFA collections through active engagement in the Unit’s instruction program.
      • Facilitate close communication and collaboration between SCA and the USU Folklore program, housed in the Department of English.

    15% Research and Scholarship Responsibilities:

    • Contribute to the fields of archival outreach, oral history and folklore archiving, or librarianship through original research or scholarly outputs (presentations, publications, white papers, standards development, exhibits, etc.)

    10% Service Responsibilities:

    • Contribute to the fields of archival outreach, oral history and folklore archiving, or librarianship by serving on university, local, regional, national, or international committees.

    Required Qualifications:

    • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science, Archival Science, or related field by start date. An appointment as affiliate librarian will be considered for those who complete degree requirement by December 2023.
    • Knowledge of archival theory and methodology including appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation.
    • Minimum one-year experience processing materials in an archives or special collections setting.
    • Commitment to special collections and archives public service, including a keen interest in promoting the use and appreciation of archival materials.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including listening, speaking, and writing.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
    • Meticulous attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment.
    • Demonstrated commitment to practices that foster inclusion and belonging.
    • Ability to conduct fieldwork.
    • Demonstrated capacity for critical thinking and problem-solving.
    • Ability to be flexible, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to change.
    • Ability to meet the university's requirements for promotion and tenure.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of intangible folk culture and ethnographic ethics/practice.
    • Experience in planning, conducting, editing, and completing in-depth archival oral histories.
    • Familiarity with Institutional Review Board protocols.
    • Degree in Folklore or experience working with folklore collections.
    • Experience teaching.
    • Familiarity with digital preservation best practices.
    • Familiarity with project management.
    • Communications and event management experience.
    • Experience supervising student employees, graduate assistants, or interns.
    • Experience with externally funded projects and/or grant writing.

    Salary minimum of $55,000, plus excellent benefits including a 14.2% (starting at $7,810) annual retirement contribution. Utah State University offers a competitive benefits package which includes medical and dental, and 22 days/year vacation.
