    Position Description

The University Library Center for Digital Scholarship at the University of California, Santa Cruz (https://library.ucsc.edu/) invites applications for the position Digital Scholarship Librarian who will work under the direction of the centers director. The University Library Center for Digital Scholarship is a growing program that provides student access to technology and experiential learning in a low-barrier environment. We foster student engagement with digital research in and out of the classroom and support faculty growth through pedagogy and research support.

We seek a motivated individual who will contribute to the Librarys digital scholarship programming. Our team works to support the campus community in their efforts to integrate digital methods into their learning, teaching, research, and individual experimentation. The University Library Center for Digital Scholarship encompasses our programming across two physical spaces: The David Kirk Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC) and the Digital Scholarship Innovation Studio (DSI). Resources in the DSC primarily support the creation of digital objects (including podcasting, video, 3D modeling, and 2D design) and resources in the DSI primarily support the creation of physical objects from digital data (including 3D printing, laser cutting, 2D plotting, and holographic displays). Our programming encompasses both spaces using a methods-first approach rather than a software first or tools first approach. Through this, we aim to focus on the specific needs of each project and identify the method and tools that best meet the stated goals of the project lead. We support a wide variety of digital methods by providing introductory support in some areas and intermediate and advanced support according to the training and specialties of our librarians. As technology changes, our work also changes, and an important aspect of this position is the ability to learn new skills and engage with new technologies as needed.

The librarian in this position will support members of the UCSC community who work with 3D data throughout its lifecycle including 3D scanning, 3D modeling, VR, 3D printing, and preservation of 3D data. We are particularly seeking candidates with experience in 3D modeling or VR/AR creation. The librarian in this position will provide support related to our newly expanded Digital Scholarship Innovation Studio, which includes 3D printers, laser cutters, Cricut maker machines, VR, and holographic equipment. Support for these methods includes both 2D and 3D design methods. The position offers an opportunity to learn our specific equipment and workflows through their own projects related to the work, though it requires a base of knowledge in these areas to work from. We value a candidates ability to interact meaningfully with our program and demonstrate how their particular skill set would integrate into and expand our digital scholarship work.

A key part of our diversity, equity, and inclusion philosophy in our work (https://guides.library.ucsc.edu/about-us/about) is making both of our spaces open and inviting to students of all backgrounds along with targeted outreach to support these goals. We recognize that access to equipment is not enough and aim to provide support for all students regardless of the existing knowledge they have. This takes form in the following ways: we aim to provide free access to materials as much as possible, we employ and train students for peer to peer support, we encourage our student assistants to work on projects they are passionate about across academic disciplines which are then used for display and training materials, we embrace failure as part of the learning process, we intentionally include process examples and failures in our displays, and we scale our training materials to meet students needs regardless of technical backgrounds. The successful candidate will play a key part in our efforts to create an inclusive program.

Duties for the position include contribution to the intellectual work of the program by supporting our community building, partnering with faculty to develop teaching assignments and research projects, and internal growth. The Digital Scholarship Librarian supports our Digital Instruction Program and our Undergraduate Research Fellowship. They help develop and run one-time workshops for faculty, graduates, and undergraduates as well as be a partner in longer-term projects. They will also be involved in the day-to-day running of the VizLab and the DSI spaces and strategic planning for the future of our program. This work includes leading internal projects and managing the training and project work of our digital scholarship student assistants. In this position, the Digital Scholarship Librarian will maintain and research current and new tech to maintain the relevance of our programming to the UCSC community.
