    Job Description:

    The University Librarian is the chief administrative officer of the University Libraries, which include the Ryan Matura Library and the Colllege of Health Education library. The University Librarian is responsible for the successful administration of the libraries and all other properly authorized policies and procedures of Sacred Heart University and leads planning for the library's future in support of both the library's mission and that of the University.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Facilitates the continuing transformation of the University Libraries into a knowledge commons that integrates diverse resources, seeks new opportunities, engages with the community, collaborates with university units, and sustains a vibrant research and learning community.
    • Creates an environment that facilitates research and scholarly activity with an understanding of innovative and traditional methods of information dissemination.
    • Establishes a shared vision that promotes the University's and the University Libraries' missions.
    • Implements a clear and concise strategic plan to advance that vision.
    • Prepares and monitors library budget.
    • Supports a culture of collegial governance.
    • Fosters an organizational and educational climate that promotes and celebrates diversity.
    • Communicates internally and externally regarding the University Libraries.
    • Develops strong relationships with Deans of other units, the Provost, President and other University administrators.
    • Develops and maintains good relationships with students, faculty, staff and community.
    • Promotes and advocates for library programs that address the needs of students, staff, faculty, and the community. University Libraries
    • Develops and administers plans, policies and procedures that will provide the range of library services required to carry out the educational objectives and mission of the University.
    • Works with library staff, the Faculty Library Liaison Committee, and other user groups such as Strategic Planning, Technology, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Curriculum Planning to formulate recommendations on services and policies for the library that meet the needs of the University curriculum.
    • Develops and oversees the integration of information technology with traditional materials and services in support of all academic programs.
    • Coordinates library policies and procedures with established University policies and procedures involving departments such as Human Resources, Purchasing, Finance, Maintenance, and Public Safety.
    • Works cooperatively with librarians and library organizations to facilitate access to local, regional and national research sources.
    • Exercises general supervision over hiring, training, job responsibilities, and evaluation of all library personnel.
    • Prepares reports, including an annual report on all library activities.
    • Works in cooperation with the department of Institutional Advancement to promote the University's development efforts, as they relate to the library. Identifies, develops and nurtures relationships with potential supporters of the library.
    • Cultivates external relations and fundraising opportunities with public and private sectors in support of the University Libraries' programs.
    • Represents and promotes the University Libraries, formally and informally, to the University, community and the world.
    • Participates actively in local, state and national library organizations.
    • All other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, and/or the President.


    Requirements:

    Evening and weekend hours may be required to support the library's hours of operation and special events.

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED:

    • Ability to respond to multiple competing demands.
    • Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school required and second graduate degree in a specialty field preferred.
    • Five years professional library administration experience, in addition to five years other professional library experience required.
    • Experience with electronic library resources for teaching and learning, including on-line materials, required. Experience in university libraries preferred.
    • Working knowledge of one or more world languages preferred.
    • Understanding and ability to articulate the values and mission of Sacred Heart University.
    • The successful candidate will be a mature, accomplished and consistent professional.
    • A collegial team player with a proven ability to motivate, engage and work collaboratively at all levels.
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written required.
    • Ability to initiate, develop and execute actions in support of departmental and University objectives.
    • History of successfully managing, motivating and inspiring staff, volunteers and constituents.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
